Learning music theory would be wise imo. Knowing the notes your looking at and having a basic grasp on tuning, chords and theory is very important for many reasons. Even simply tuning drums for instance. Out of tune drums can ruin a song. Reading sheet music is not important, but knowing everything else is. There are probably several books at Barnes and Noble/Borders etc that are just titled "Beginners guide to music theory". And you could also pick up a chord wheel as I've linked below that will open your eyes real quick and help you understand alot immediatley.
