interesting post. Personally, I find it hard to play in electronic music projects without any effects at all. I used to have the same attitude you have and I admired John Frusciante for getting so much out of a guitar with so little add-ons (on BloodSugarSexMagik)
Looking forward to ideas regarding my original three questions!
cheers,
Heads up to guitar players
I am just getting into a new band...
I will work with an old saxophoneplayer I used to play with. we will combine traditional instruments will laptop/electronika. I like strong direct sounds. kick ass, funk, in your face things. coupled with electronica this can open up new possibilties.
we will record our live stuff, so I probably able to post it in the next couple of months on my websites.

I've been playing with one of the pre-production pigtronix units [www.Pigtronix.com] and doing some A-B tests against various VST's.
It definitely has a tone all its own but what really makes it "sing" is when you use it along with the expression pedal. This lets you play with the settings as you play live making it more an extension of your instrument than a plug-in that runs at a pre-programmed rate. The good news is they've decided to ship expression pedals with the units as part of the deal.

For those tracking this one, last night was a watershed!
On Feb 14th Maroon 5 picked up 2 of the EP-0's [that's the preproduction model of the Envelope Phaser] and last night they were rocking with it on Saturday Night Live!
