Cool. Thanks for all your help on this.

I'd be more disappointed in not getting this to work, but last night I discovered the much-discussed issue of not being able to record automation in session clips (only arrangement clips). In the end, this would reduce the usefulness of assigning macros to arbitrary CCs anyhow. :-)

Its not a big deal to me though, I'm happy enough drawing CC envelopes into clips. These are minor blemishes in a product that inspires me each time I use it. And who knows, maybe Ableton will address them some day.

"MIDI learn" a CC to a macro on an empty rack and make sure you set up "MIDI remote in/out' correctly.
You'll get the same result plus you get to specify which CC to use.

Hi Hoffman2k. Is there some way of doing this in Ableton Live 9.5? I was hoping to use 8 macro knobs to control CC in an outboard synth. still not sure how to proceed. I go into MidiMap and I just can't see any way to map it to a CC.

You might want to check out Macrobat, which comes with Clyphx as an alternative. That's how I used midi effect racks to send CC values to external gear. Then I don't even need to map anything, just use a scripted controller to control the macros of the selected rack.

Actually, I found this: http://www.roberthenke.com/technology/m4l.html - ControlChange8 - a Max for Live device that lets you just slam any old CC out.

Seems exactly what I was trying to find.
