I wonder if Final Cut Pro will even run on a G4 550? I suppose it would, but I don't think it would be a pleasant experience. Especially on a tight deadline trying to get an assignment done for class the next day.
Also, what version of Final Cut Pro is installed on this old laptop? You are going to want to be running the same version as the class.Wouldn't it suck to walk into class with a circa 2000 pismo powerbook running Final Cut Pro 3 to see a bunch a G5's or intel towers running Final Cut Studio HD 5.1?
I agree with everyone else, buy something newer. Preferably a MBP. You can get an education discount on Final Cut as well as your noteboook. Your school applications will fly (which really should be your first concern) and as an added bonus Live will kick ass.
