I totally hear you, Sales Dude. Being more of a musician/performer and less of a programmer, in my gut I am not excited about this. I wonder if this partnership is a sign of Ableton getting further from their roots as as a performance-based instrument

OR

to those who are experienced Max/MSP users, can you speak of possibilites that could make the new software even MORE powerful for performers? Would non-programmers be able to benefit from all this?

For the record: when i hear DAW, I hear cubase, logic, DP,...
Yeah... for the record, I didn't say "don't develop live as a DAW" at all.

I just want them to keep it simple, and I want to be surprised. I want a new product that does something new and unexpected.
I still use my live 2 version when I get to feeling that way, keeps me from relying too heavily on midi and all the other cool features live now has. And if I get into something really good, i can bring it into L6.

In my gut I'm getting really excited about this... Even if it is something as simple as OSC integration, thats great, ideally I'd leave Live running in the background and play with my own toys...

Although I've been a Live user since version 1, over the years I've been working with it less and less in performance because it was all getting a bit complicated, and so instead built a performance environment in max (which I've also been using for a long time) which is exactly aimed at me and my love of wonky, phasing loops

I think you'll find that most of what people build in max is aimed precisely at performance and stripped down to suit their own needs...

If you have got at least the max demo downloaded and you're using a mac check out some of the work that I did last summer based around xy controllers that can be used to automate things like spatialisation, so that your fingers can be busy doing other things... these ones are pretty dumbed down for the purposes of meeting an assessment deadline but really easy to extend into midi land...

In particular try gravity, the rectangulator and motion. Just open the patches starting with an underscore. For those that are interested, all the real functionality is written in JavaScript.

holy shit man! nice!
I especially like "momentum" that's an amazing idea, and the implementation is dope. Very good work, If this "partnership" actually results in some sort of runtime in ableton integration, I call your patches to be the first on my list.
tight.

oh damn! when you move one of the balls over another one they'll gain the same vector and continue "bouncing" and producing sample bangs, for like stutter effects, oh my lord, you are my new hero.

   ROFL

But as there's no "hoffman2k" fretless or Peeedddrrroooo-phone I'd say that was a coincidence....Unless it was their way of calling me a Bell-end 8O

But I totally see what you're saying - I'm in no-man's land musically these days, but I really cant blame Ableton for that, I love alot of things about Live 6, I'm just saying I know what you mean about the simplicity of Live 3 -

Live 3 actually felt like a bit of a Peak time for me - I used to rewire Reason and then record loops and tweak - the whole clip envelope thing for me was totally revolutionary - and alot of that was BECAUSE it was audio only, because it meant you were forced to work with limitations and it meant getting some really unique sounds

and since midi came in in a way it kind of got a little more conventional because I'd use midi to play external VSTs and be less likely to change them about

I stopped using Plogue after Live 4 - nuff said!

The vicious cycle with Live is that the update cycle is so frequent and ALWAYS exciting, so it means I spend alot of time just getting excited about new features and not making much music, I wouldnt change that though

One thing I will say though is they always seem to surprise - it's never what I expect (apart from the little things - but the big new features always surprise) they are never what I expected so I'm sure whatever happens here will be not what we might think, and it will be great

Angstrom wrote:Ableton know their code and their users, they will know better than anyone how to "make Live go modular" if they wanted to.

How could they bring Cycling in as consultants on something so intrinsic?
well c74 arent bad programmers either!

IMO, max is the most versatile modular software tool for music with huge heritage in this field. yes, there are other apps like reaktor / bidule, but none offer the same level of detail and mulitude of possiblities as max (including msp and jitter).

personnally, i think its a very good idea, they are both small companies operating in the more marginal areas of music production. both companies have a proven track record of developing nu software with a more pioneering approach then the other "big fish in the pond" (most of whom have followed the same model for music making software for the last 10-20 yrs).

if ableton want to make live more "modular" then i cant think of a better partnership... i'd much rather c74 then NI / steinberg / apple.

having said that, this is a press release which serves a purpose - to get ppl talking about ableton + c74. the proof will be in the pudding, when they actually announce a particular product! only then will we be able to tell how successful the partnership has been.

the list would be long... very very long!
the possibilities are also difficult to define, as there are so many possibilities...
generally speaking, the limitations of max are defined by the hardware, not the software.

it might be better to think of it the other way round - what do u want to do and how might you go about translating that into a computer program?

i also like this quote, by the author of max himself.

“Max is a graphical music programming environment for people who have hit the limits of the usual sequencer and voicing programs for MIDI equipment.”
—Miller Puckette, Max reference manual, 1988

I'm sure it'll be cool, whatever products this colaboration brings.

My co-worker got into MAX recently and he's been telling me "You gotta get Pluggo! You gotta get Pluggo!" And I'm like "Yeah, totally, that sounds really cool. But what I really gotta do is finish my album."

I recently got turned on to Drumagog and I thought "Shit! I could go back and remix my entire record with that and really get the drums popping!" But the "Shit!" wasn't a happy and excited "Shit!" it was a "Oh fuck." "Shit!".
