I'm thinking of selling my car when I move there. Good move or bad move?

I just think it'll be more of an inconvenience than it will actually help me there... plus I could DEFINITELY use the extra money

There's a possibility that I'll be living right on-campus at NYU but it's like a 50% chance that I actually wil. So I'm still keeping my options open about getting a place.

What part of NY are you looking to move into and when does that internship end? (just to know how long you'll be out there)

Keep me up to date on the roommate situation. I might actually need to find someone to share a place with (as long as we have separate bedrooms of course ) so guess it's worth a shot keeping in touch just in case.

The only reason I ever so slightly regret selling mine before I moved to NYC was not being able to easily get out of the city to go hiking. Besides that, it was great to not 'need' a car or have to deal with it.

internship ends whenever... i plan on staying in ny though to pursue my career. I am willing to live anywhere in NYC area. hit me up

one of the best parts of living in the city- you dont have to drive if you dont want to! rent may be expensive but not paying for repairs, gas and insurance is awesome as well as the fact that you have less of a foot print....

Not once have I wished I had a car here in the city. Whenever I travel (which is several times a month) I HATE renting a car and driving. Sell the car. Put the money towards rent or more gear.

BTW I just got an email today saying that on-campus housing wont be available this upcoming semester. So that means that the search for an apartment is ON.

My wife and I were car-less our first 3 years here and eventually got one just for weekend trips. But I keep having to get it jumped b/c we can't ever seem to find the time to use it for said weekend trips and it just sits on the street.

Zip cars are great to rent for weekend getaways as well.

i found all my roommates in NYC on craigslist and it usually ended up working out really well. don't know what your price range is, but if you're looking for "reasonably priced", you won't find it in the NYU area...

williamsburg is way on the hipster side which can be obnoxious and i've seen rents comparable to those in the east village (granted, they're nicer & bigger spaces than you'd find in manhattan, but still). the spots in brooklyn closest to manhattan are going to be expensive (brooklyn heights, dumbo, williamsburg), but you can definitely find some good deals the farther out you go (carroll gardens, fort greene, some parts of park slope, prospect heights, sunset park). i would avoid greenpoint-- i lived there for 6 months and the G train was a BITCH to get around on. i also know some people in bushwick (or "east williamsburg" as the realtors like to say), but the apartments/lofts can be pretty run-down and some parts are a little sketchy. I preferred not to live off the L train, as there seemed to be issues with it all the time..

queens can be reasonably priced too (astoria, woodside, long island city), but is more quiet, residential, and not much is going on. i lived in park slope (brooklyn) and loved it-- great restaurants, prospect park, funky dive bars, lovely brownstone buildings. i went to NYU for a semester and it was only a 30 minute commute on the F train.

and DEFINITELY get rid of your car!!! the subways are 24/7 and very easy to navigate. driving and parking can be a nightmare in the city, and after getting towed twice, racking up almost $1000 in parking tickets, and getting my car totaled by a taxi, i can fully vouch for ditching the wheels..

Not to be a downer or anything, but you should get it out of your head that you intend to find a "reasonably" priced apartment. Approach getting an apartment in NYC as an endurance testing obstical course. The goal is simply to survive, and to come out the other end as a New Yorker.

I moved here in 2000 and ended up renting a place in Astoria for the first year and a half. I know there has been a lot of love for Astoria in this thread, and some of my good friends still live there and love it, but I am not a fan. I'm sorry, but I just find Astoria depressing. I've always felt that way and still do to this day.

I live in Jersey City, right across the Hudson from lower Manhattan, and I totally love it. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of depressing areas of Jersey City, but our spot is amazing. It used to be you could get a cheap place here, but it's become a yuppie condo sess pool.

I thought about moving last year, and I looked into it very intensely. All I can say is, go for a cheap place in the South Slope around 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. There are a few "cheap" places left there. Cheap means $1000 for a one bedroom. It's not depressing, you'll be within walking distance of a few bars that you'll actually want to hang out at and meet actual cute girls in. That's the only corner of the city that this secenerio holds true. In Astoria, if you want to go to a cool bar and meet girls- you're looking at a 40 minute N Train ride.

Williamsburg is fun to hang out in, but the L Train is total fucking hell in the morning. Do not move there if you have a morning commute.

I lived in South South slope (around 23rd and 4th) and paid $575 for half of a two bedrooom. It was a good place to live... I was definitely jealous of people who lived closer to the park, but they were all jealous of my rent.
