"in track crossfading between clips"

In Live, when you trigger a new clip on a track, the old clip stops instantly.

In ProTools/DP/Cubase, when you "trigger" a new clip, you can let the old one fade out gradually, and for X number of seconds, both clips are playing simulataneously. And instead of "triggering" the new one, you can let it fade in for X number of milliseconds before it "starts".

This is useful for when you, say, record a guitar part... and there's a spot where you messed up so you go re-record that one section, but leave the rest of your otherwise-good take. The splice points are smoothed over by the crossfade (just like in Simpler/Sampler-- which uses crossfade to smoothen the looping function). The assembled guitar track only takes up one track-- which is not only visually pleasing, but means you can apply just one EQ, and one reverb, and/or one compressor to make your track sound good.

When you have 10 clips all stopping at the same time, and 10 new ones starting (as you transition from verse to chorus, perhaps) I find that Live hiccups a little. There are workarounds, but I'm used to the crossfade-method. Other ProTools users might feel the same way.

Its a basic function on all other "linear" DAWs I've used (ProTools, Cubase, DP), but isn't implemented in Live 6.0.5. Maybe in Live 7 :) Even if it isn't, I'm not going back.

Well I use Live in a way I feel it wasn't intended. I think I might be one of the few people that never has a single clip on the Mixer view. I can't get my head around triggering shit and all that. I'm a Logic guy and so I use the mixer view to load synths and arm tracks for recording. I do everything in the arrange window in a way that most people seem to save Live is not so good at. I love it. The bits about recording vocals above is very true. I often find myself forcing entirely new takes because editing it on separate tracks is a pain in the ass.

I can fly around an arrangement so fast in ableton. Chopping audio, messing with midi, recording stuff on the fly. Everything is right in front of you. My creativity is through the roof with Live. Couple that with super workflow speed and that's why I use Live. Between that, an MPC and some hard synths... being so hands on just forces me to keep moving a track forward.

What I want and NEED out of Live is the audio crossfades, more audio processing like we always talk about and a much better summing mixer. I don't care what anyone says... if you get a full complete track in Live, the low-mid definitely sounds muddier than it does in Logic or Cubase. It's not something I have to prove... I can hear it, my mixes take longer to do and I find myself fiddling with that end of the mix more.

Better audio quality please. After all, it's made for this. Can't you just steal the engine from someone else?!

When this happens, it will be THE beast. Ableton just needs to understand what they've created... it's not just for performance and your market is incredibly larger in the production world. Cater to our every need, keep your interface and usability and go rule the world! :D
if creativity is outlawed, only outlaws will be creative
