the only workaround is so slave live via midi-clock to your sequenzer and route the output into your host-sequencer (works great via rme totamix or ADAT loopback). i've done it with cubase, but the timing isn't that stable.... therefore I don't use it anymore.
so vst in rewire is a big +1 for me
