saying there are too many soft synths out there is like saying there are too many hammers. i mean, carpenters should all just use the same hammer right? they all do the same thing right? so someone should tell all the different hammer manufacturers out there that they have over saturated the market and they should make something else besides hammers.
shit, while we are at it, there are too many models of cars too, and microwaves, and toilet paper. we should all just have one of everything and there should be no choices for anyone.
/sarcasm
i have found that the ease of use of most of the software i use makes people lazy and therefore there are a lot of producers who do in fact sound similar. but i have also found that if the person using the tool, no matter which tool, knows how to use the tool, they can produce something pretty amazing and original, be it a song, a synth patch, or a set of cabinets.

I'm really feeling Massive. In every track.
I use the shit out of my Puremagnetik subcription (best $60 I ever spent). I guess that's not a soft synth though...
Korg MonoPoly tickles my fancy!
If you haven't tried symptohm:mehloman than you can't really say all soft synths sound the same.
ABL2 - I've lovin' it! (Timberlake wrote that jingle btw)
Alphakanal Automat gets lots of quality time.
I'm probably going to get zebra two too.

any absynth 4 users wanna tell us how great & unique it is ?
(a softsynth I happen to be eyeballing...)

you know....its not what softsynth you use...its how you process it.
i dont need a 6 oscillator subtractive synth when can just triple track different tunings of dahornet and achieve something as convincing.
it is all how you process your sound.
putting buzzer, automat, or dahornet through camelcrusher or frohmage can dramatically change the character of your synth.

Personally, I've never dug it, but I also didn't dig the MD (pre-UW), so if that's any indication, maybe you'll love it!

ok let me clear this up for ya
i know what "tweaking the filters" will do. also i dont use presets. in most of the music i make i usually scan through wave forms while recording a synth just because i get bored with the same sound.
but this to gets dull sounding because at the end it just sounds like a synth scaning through wave forms with filtering.
what johnisfaster had to say about hearing a sound and saying "that sounds like a synth" and then saying "there is no new sounds" is where i am at..
everything sounds the same to me..
i dont know if i need a break from music or synths.
when ever i get to this point i end up deleting every synth and just using reason. in fact this is what i will most likely do.

Would be good to have dedicated controllers bundled with the software... Zebra 2 = 4 x joystick with a few pots!

Synths like Zebra (where you can draw 16 different waveforms and then morph thru them to create a single oscillator) or Sytrus (where you can import any single-cycle waveform and if you use say Galbanum's waveforms, there's an easy 2500+ to choose from) are far from limited and far far from sounding like the everyday saw/square/sine synth.

whats the diference between importing wave forms or drawing them into a synth, from just using a sampler?
