I fyou want to incorporate a computer with your CD-J's try a program called Torq

http://www.torq-dj.com

it's like a final scratch or whatever plus you can use your CD-J's to either play cd's or control cd's which control the music inside the computer

you can do some serious "kicking it" with the looping, sampler and effects

but you can really get busy with LIVE - a little time warping and you're all good

it's really awesome all the options a "dj" has - it's really up to you and what floats your boat

Haha, you undersell yourself quite well. I'd say if you're DJ'ing, and running lights and visuals all by yourself, you're doing a bit more than plain old DJ'ing! ;)

Yeah, it's tough. Feelings of personal satisfaction aside, it seems there are 2 types of audience person : 1 type could care less if it's original/non-original, mixed-by-hand/mixed-by-machine, whatever - as long as the party is bumpin' and fun, its all good. The other type cares deeply about how the music is made, and who is making it. The problem here is that most of these people don't take computer music seriously in the first place, and if they do it's probably because they are/were a producer, or are close with someone who is/was.

The world of production is crazy, and I don't understand it.....it seems like a true all-original live performance isn't valued by enough people to make it worth the extreme effort to pull it off really well. On the other hand, it seems to have become next to impossible to make a living producing tracks for DJ's to spin.

Where does that leave us? Am I missing something important?

wow, very interesting topic!

i would say, it can, or can't be DJing.. if you use it to dj, then you are. if you use it to produce, then you are.

i have tried out ableton with the cdjs, and vinyl dex, but it was a little unsatisfying at first not having the tempo sync.. my mixer even sends midi control data, and it still didn't work quite right..

i am thinking of getting torq, having just blown my old soundcard.. comes with the connectiv 4x4 rca, midi in/out that i need, maybe that will work.

ok, back on topic, you can use turntables to dj, you can use ableton to dj.

if you know how to get everything integrated solidly enough for live use reliably, you can, i believe mix seamlessly back and forth dj between the two, with no hassles of having to take your hands too far away from the action, allowing fluidity and creativity to spring from you while not getting distracted or hampered by the details.

that's what i hope to achieve, and it's the standard i'd hold ableton to, (to be considered djing) as i am not willing to give up my usual methods, tactile control on vinyl or cd, with 4 cue buttons and my headphones directly into the mixer.

i hope to be able to retain that and be able to use FX, warping, sampling etc. in ableton at the same time to add some spice to a dj set.

i Totally understand where you coming from brosiff, it's been a little over 8 years for me since i first got the itch. I feel theres no skill in just pushing a button. like mentioned above when it comes down to it in a club live the real DJ's will shine :D
