pah!
merely taking adonis' hot potatoe, and putting it on a plate with some butter and a dash of pepper.
Besides, I want to see if there's something valid to his comments. First, the whiteman has been ripping off the black man since the dawn of music...then its in the last 100 years.
Regarding the dawn of music bit, I wont make any assumptions ? Dunno...fill me in on what the fuck he's talking about, please, anyone.
Regarding the last 100 years bit, well...this could yield something worthwhile, and I genuinely want to know who he's referring to

Didn't Suge Knight and his crew hang that dude (Vanilla Ice) by his feet over the edge of his balcony, threatening to drop him unless he signed a large portion of his royalties over to him, which he promptly did... ?
That's the word on the street at-least.

I just heard the shittiest white blues band ever yesterday at an arts festival. Incredibly stiff white version of music originated by black people.
It seems to me that most of the western musical innovations of the past 100+ years have been from black culture....blues, jazz, rock, funk, hiphop, house, techno. As black culture develops it to a point a point where a lot of people take notice, mainstream artists (who are typically white) start getting involved and after a decade or so, it's mostly white people making the music, or the audience is mostly white people.
I don't see it as so much a thing as white culture stealing the music, as it is mainstream culture which happens to be mostly white, adopts the techniques of novel music. I imagine that if mainstream culture was mostly black, it would be much the same.
And yes, skin color does matter. It's not a coincidence that most of the musical innovation comes from black culture. It's not a coincidence that if you are born black, you grow up with a much different set of parameters. It's not a coincidence that centuries of slavery and oppression have created deep cultural differences between blacks and whites. There's a lot to be said of the beauty that arises from oppression and suffering.
Western music culture has a long history of being resuscitated by "minority" cultures. Western classical music was revitalized several times by out-of-ideas composers travelling down to Africa, or to eastern erupore/western asia to bring back folk melodies and rhythms for use in western classical music, which often initiated a whole cycle of musical exploration.
You can't really "steal" music anyway. All you can do is appropriate the techniques. A bunch of middle aged white guys can get up on stage and play stiff white blues....but they will never reproduce the magic of the original guys who developed the blues in the first place. If those white guys just focused on creating something that flowed from their essence, then they too would have something badass and original.
And it's not just white culture "stealing" from black culture...what about the musicians all over the world that have adopted bluesjazzrockfunkhiphoptechno musical techniques?
How about black culture stealing from white culture? Did those jazz musicians get some of their ideas from the harmonic language developed by western classical music? How about Japanese culture stealing from white culture? Car industry? Electronics industry?

K-Fed, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Sting
I don't know if it's ripping off or not, but Cilla Black, etc
Influence and rip off get awfully close sometimes: Rolling Stones, for example

Blacks artistic expressions have hijacked fro day one. ITS stealing when you are your race pretend you created the art form you practice without giving respect where it is due, respect to its origins. The idea that blacks invented something SCARES the shit out of white people. Why? It negates the idea that we are inferior and whats more terrifying than that to white people. When was the last time you heard blacks given credit for house, techno etc. To mention that shit alone will fuck with your superiority complex on so many levels. For example I was reading a magazine the other day that said Phil Spector invented Dub Music. Can you believe that shit? Phil Spector not King Tubby invented Dub. Do you know how serous that statement is, that Phil Spector may have invented Dub Music. Whats next Bach may have invented Rap, Reggae etc.
