www.myspace.com/siriusmo is probably my favorite right now for the uptempo chop/cutup approach. and for slower tempos machine drum can't be beat. i've loved this stuff since i first heard mantronix edit samples in like 1988...there's plenty of the choppy choppy microsample style in the mixes in my sig:

well, yes, i've released a couple of records on ed banger (i'm "krazy baldhead"), and yes, i use live for my gigs and productions...

regarding the other members of ed rec, i think sebastian uses cubase and some hardware sampler, and justice uses PT and has a bit of analog gear too.
i can't tell you more, as i don't know actually. but there's indeed a lot of compression going on. and yeah, chopping up samples is probably the way to go to have their sound.
on a side note: justice uses Live for their live shows (not DJ set). definitely worth checking, it sounds very good.
i saw daft punk ysterday and they also use live. needless to say, it was awesome.

This way they can get a "pumping" vibe that would be unachieveable by using a master engineer right at the last stage.

You know I heard that one of Daft Punk's dad is an old skool mix engineer and he was quite revered in France. He has his old studio in their back garden with all this old analogue gear from the late 70's early 80's and it was the Dad who helped Daft Punk with the production and mixing on all their tracks.

and not to forget a guy called Nilz from the exchange mastering who added the extra thump.

a lot of the new french stuff would sound 100000 times better if it were worked on by some better and dedicated mixing engineers, but its not short on music and creativity by any means.

as it gets commercialised, watch the sound quality improve.

Yes this is a great point. These days, as I grow older, I'm so much more into music that has character rather than a polished production sound.

(Although I do still have some guilty pleasures like that new Cicada album )

I think a lot of the stuff on Ed Banger uses not just compression, but distortion, and effects like Supatrigga, as well as some really kool and varied drum programming, sometimes mixing 3/4 beats with 4/4 within the same arrangement.

In a recent interview I read with Justice, they said they use Cubase and Garageband.
"We have a big analogue desk as well: a big Soundcraft, I forget the model number. It doesnt get used any more though, we just do everything inside the computer in Cubase and Garageband"

My only problem is that this stuff has broken into the mainstream, and has a lot of American electro heads jumping on the bandwagon.
The style will not sound as new and fresh to me very soon. I always like to hear new styles which are ahead of the game. Call me a scenester if you like, I dont care.
Ed Banger are not trend followers, they are trend setters, Im sure a lot of those guys will start coming up with kool new styles soon, and the cycle will continue, but Ed Banger will always be ahead of the game.
