... I don't think so... they've been doing this for almost a year now all over the world... I've heard 3 horror stories this past year about people getting sued by Waves!!!Thinktanx wrote:They would have to prove that he is ripping them off, yes. Waves piracy lawsuit blues - don't get $$$CREWED
They recently changed the WUP policy...detroitechno wrote:I agree that piracy hurts developers, but read up on the WUP (waves update plan) and I have no sympathy for waves. They treat the people who actually buy the stuff like garbage.
I would honestly be happy to see waves file for bankruptcy.
Do yourself a favor, NEVER support this company! Trust me.
I'm very happy with Waves, and there customer support is very good. You get what you pay for....
I just grabbed the API demo this morning, works fine. The WUP has changed considerably as well, not like it used to be.eyeknow wrote:and to add......I've never been able to even try the products......all that ilok ON TOP of ilok "extra" shit......the demos NEVER WORK!detroitechno wrote:I agree that piracy hurts developers, but read up on the WUP (waves update plan) and I have no sympathy for waves. See, to me, ilok is supposed to be the "end all" piracy thing.....but with all the extra wup and ilok extra client stuff.......I just don't get it.

this whole thing is fucking stupid. for one it doesn't sound like this producer said "oh you need waves? here let me torrent that for you" another since when can company's send spy's into your home to see if a product is legit or not?
i cant imagine epiphone coming to my house to make sure my guitar isnt stolen or that i still have the receipt for it. what if shure came over and seen i have a sm57 but no box or receipt? can they now sue me for using a stolen mic?
this is idiotic. i also hope waves go bankrupt.
let me add another thing. what about all the software company's that make emulations of synths, guitar amps, and even channel strips (hello waves) maybe they all should be sued for selling a product they did not invent?
isnt it stealing to take some one elses idea and sell it as your own...
thats right waves you fucking thieves your going down!

You're mixing a whole bunch of ideas together here and sound, well, a bit confused.nathannn wrote:this whole thing is fucking stupid. for one it doesn't sound like this producer said "oh you need waves? here let me torrent that for you" another since when can company's send spy's into your home to see if a product is legit or not?

Hardware piracy is not an issue, we're talking about software, and that is a major problem. Emulations are generally done under licence, or with the blessing of the owner.
most software company's claim they dont see a difference between hardware and software when it comes to theft. so in there words its the same thing. now is it ok for who ever makes waves office supply's to spy on them and make sure they have receipts for every pencil? its now ok for waves to spy on people and make sure they are using legit software. why cant we make sure waves is using legit pens and pencils? seems fair to me.polyslax wrote:You're mixing a whole bunch of ideas together here and sound, well, a bit confused.nathannn wrote:this whole thing is fucking stupid. for one it doesn't sound like this producer said "oh you need waves? here let me torrent that for you" another since when can company's send spy's into your home to see if a product is legit or not?

Anyone trying to make money from music in a semi-pro or professional way should not be using cracks or demo software.
That is as unprofessional as it gets in my book, if I went into a so called studio facility and saw dongle emulation or H20 try before buy etc then I would back right off and go elsewhere.
I refuse to run cracks in my own home studio, if I can't afford it then I do without or try and use legitimate freeware. I work hard and try to save a little for the goodies I do want, that way I know I won;t be getting swooped on by the law and if they should visit that I can happily sit down. I will also get upgrades and tech support.
Although I agree that Waves suck dirty donkey balls both on their extortionate pricing and on the stupid i-lok dongle. Which is why I use paid plugins by PSPAudio (only mac is on ilok, Pc is ilok free for individual plugins), Wavearts, Voxengo etc which are often 50-75% less per plug than Waves plugs individually and sound better in many cases. Sonalksis are another good plugin maker whose products are better than Waves imho and don't come iloked

that's weak. pirating sucks yes; but 75 G, come on. I guess they are making examples.
what i do not get is this, for the price of a freakin waves bundle can't you get some actual descent hardware that does the same things? i mean isn't the diamond bundle like 2800. why not get a distressor and a sweet eq and some other box. never got that.

They know the guy doesn't have 75K... they start off at that amount because then when they want to settle at the "reasonable" price of 20K, the defendant will be more likely to go for it. It's like the barter system... except you're not actually buying anything.dango wrote:that's weak. pirating sucks yes; but 75 G, come on. I guess they are making examples.
I've demoed Waves products in the past, some may consider them overrated, but I'd say they're certainly good software overall. However:
massively underrated Wave Arts plugins instead.
No I don't work for them, but Trackplug rocks my world!
... is the reason that I've avoided purchasing Waves plugs entirely, and why you should all go and take a look at theeyeknow wrote:all that ilok ON TOP of ilok "extra" shit

Waves is one of The best developers out there...Their tools are now so common in every studio for a reason...They do an Awesome job even compared to the best HW gear out there...
It's funny that you people hate on them...
I don't think they're pricey... Their plugins cost as much an sometimes less than Mcdsp /URS /Wave arts / sonalksis / tc /UAD /PSP ....when you buy a bundle a plugin costs 40-70$ (of course there are a lot of plugs....
Being an audio professional I see it as a good investment...
Their development is awesome... and the people that work there know their Shiit....
so if you don't need waves....why use the cracks???
because it's Damn good software... and probably the best algorithms out there !
yes Ilok is annoying... but the plugs are AWESOME!!!
the $75k amount was based on the MSRP of all the plugins they say he had (i think they also accuse him of having two of the SSL EQs) x2 (two computers)and then doubled ++ for penalty fees.sqook wrote:They know the guy doesn't have 75K... they start off at that amount because then when they want to settle at the "reasonable" price of 20K, the defendant will be more likely to go for it. Because the situation is ongoing.... I honestly don't know and wouldn't say if he was using cracks or just Demo. It is a hard situation though. There are lots of these nice home/commercial studios within 10 miles of his place that cater to hip-hop artists. They all know each other, and are competing. There is a lot of pressure to have the Waves L1 and L2 plugins, the SSL stuff, as well as many other plugins (and mics, and pres, and synths...).
