I'm a huge NI fan, but I think that GR is a big fat dud. Amplitube is a long ways ahead in terms of realism IMO.
There's a couple places where AT really shines- the 50 watt EL34 power amp model's superb, for example, as is the pitch shifting. However, the other effects are iffy at best, and even with X-Gear, you're still limited as far as real time control goes. If you combine both host automation and MIDI, you can get control over both the stomp and rack effects (the MIDI automation only works for turning off and on the stomp effects, as pedals for wah and volume and previous/next patch selectors). Plus, it uses close to double the CPU of an equivalent GR rig.
GR for the most part has better effects (with the exception of pitch effects) and much better automation. With GR3, the matched cabinets are miles ahead of the previous version's cabs (which are still available).
The weak point of GR's the higher gain amps, such as their Rectifier emu. By turning down the bias in expert mode, those amps liven up quite a bit, and become quite a bit more realistic.
At the end of the day, they both have strengths and weaknesses. I use both myself.

Agree totally. AT does an amazing job of recreating smaller amps with just a touch of growl rather than heaps of distortion. I don't bother with the effects.

Guitar Rig 3 will have an update shortly that should address some of the noise issues.... but for me the AT2 VST still crashes in Live 7 the moment I begin looping. (I can instantiate it as a vst WITHIN Revalver VST and it will run stably....go figure....

I have both AmpliTube 2,AmpliTube Jimi Hendrix edition so I downloaded X-GEAR for free. I'm wondering when I do the install it's going ask for the serial number as far as I know I don't have any serial number. Also I recently reloaded software using windows xp updated rme multiface drivers and ableton 7.03 and both AmpliTube 2,AmpliTube Jimi Hendrix edition crash ableton. Any ideas other than waiting for more updates. I have quite a few 3rd party plugins as far as I know AmpliTube is the only one thats causing crashes.

The new upgrade (3.1) to Guitar Rig 3 made enormous improvements in noise reduction, to the point where noise is almost nonexisent.
IMNSHO......

This is how I feel about GR2 (I'm not a huge fan of NI, however). In comparison to Amp2, GR2 is way too noisy and its sounds are almost "hyper real"...like using too much artificial flavoring or something. The sounds are so "realistic" they are almost caricatures of the real thing.
IMHO

I sometimes use Amplitube 2.0 for a clean sound, experimenting with different presets, then getting the guitar to sit correctly in the mix, with a bit of eq, you can get some decent results, if you do it right most people wouldn't be able to tell it from micing up an amp.
The problem comes with any kind of distortion. Doesn't matter what you do, no software or plug is is going to get near the sound of the real thing, ie - mic(s) in front of a guitar cab. The sound is very different and can be spotted a mile off, in my opinion.
AmpliTube metal presets not showing up in X-Gear

Hi. I have Amplitube JimiHendrix and AmpliTube Metal. So I downloaded X-Gear. Now, my JimiHendrix Presets are showing up in X-Gear, but not my Metal-Presets.... Any hint?
The standalone version of Metal works fine... and so does the plugin... But I want to use the presets in X-Gear, so I don't need two amplitubes lurking in my setup...
Any help, guys?

That's strange, I have Amplitube 2 and Amplitube JH and all their presets show up in X-Gear. Did you install X-Gear last?

...you see? Yes, I have AmpliTube 2 aswell, and those presets show up, too.
Just the ones from
Amplitube Metal don't...
I guess I need a new version of X-Gear... I heard that 1.2 is out - didn't have a chance to grab it yet, though...
