What would really be ideal if there was some kind audio recording device that you could record snippets of music that has already been recorded at a professional recording studio by somebody else and then somehow sync them together and stack them on top of each other. We could then talk over these snippets and tell stories. That way every single person could write music. Then there should be some kind of website where people could share these songs with the world. Utopia.
You're an idiot. What there REALLY needs to be is a thing where you can go and whatever is on your mind instantly communicate it only constrained by the users grasp of spelling, grammar, and base intelligence. Then anyone else can nearly instantly do the same thing so that in no time there is this sort of 'cascade' of thoughts bubbling out of the users minds like an effervescent thought fart. Then we wouldn't even NEED music!

I think Apple is going to release something like this as soon as they figure out how to link your thought waves to your bank account.

I've been working on a very similar idea to this actually,, okay, lets see if you can picture what i'm trying to do,, imagine a small glass inclosed room that is big enough for maybe two people, okay?,,
now,, there is a small "nozzle" at just about head hight,, or maybe even in the actual roof of the glass inclosed room,,, this "nozzle" has a mesh of steel or some other kind of robust synthesized material over the protruding end,,, the "nozzle" is attached by a net work of "Pipes",, (sorry about all the technical jargon, i'm trying to keep it as simple as possible so i don't loose you,,) to a central reservoir of heated compressed gasses or,, "Water",,
The idea is that after a couple of months,, or even weeks during the hotter periods of the year,, rather than wait for a rain "shower" that you can stand out side naked in until you are "Clean",, you can create your own weather cycle in the small glass room any time that is convenient,,,
What do you think?,, will it catch on?

You people are all insane. I'm going to forward this thread to the producers of Modern Marvels on the History Channel.

sound design

I was just about to post the info about this book...beat me to it!

I'm working on the first track that I've done nearly all the sound design myself, and it rocks!! In the past, I would spend way too long surfing presets and drum sounds, and end up losing a lot of the creative flow doing so. Now, I am creatively engage at every step of the process, which paradoxically has the effect of getting much more done in a a much shorter amount of time. I always thought building sounds from the ground up would take more time, but it actually takes less time (italics mine). It's very cool!

For example, I decided to make my own kick drum. Rather than spending an hour auditioning kick drums, I made one in Albino, and EQ'd and compressed it to get it where I want it. Took about the same amount of time, but it's my first one....the next will come much much faster. Now, if I have a problem with the way it sits in the mix later on, I know exactly what to do to fix it because I am responsible for every easpect of it's sound.

I haven't been able to find very advanced books on synthesis, but this one looks more involved than anything I've seen yet.

thanks for linking me up to this nebulae. awesome.

this is the kind of thing i need to stop being a pre-set whore. it feels like cheating when i use someone else's synth noises.

excellent. legend. thanks.

Cool, man, make sure you buy the book and support Simon's excellent work. And I'm sure the 300-page book has a lot more good knowledge than the 100-page freebie.

+1

these days I use sampler for most everything

I just use a mic, maybe the laptop inbuilt one and create some noise or something and use it as a waveform

way more fun than surfing presets
