Sorry, i don't agree. The mac is the dongle and that's what you actually shall buy...these 500 bugs are a poor lure.
I've been working on Logic for about 13 years and i think i can tell were its good at and were its weakneeses are. I never used it's plugs, the eq's and comps are crap, let me tell you this. EXS is ok but far away from beeing modern or time ahead.
But the worst thing about Apple is its customers relation. Have your mac or your programm broken down and you're lost...!!! Absolutly lost! And then its gettin' expensive...believe me that...
Enough about apples...go for LIVE!!!

maybe they should also include 3 best-looking women of your choice?
I don't want to be paying for products I don't need. When I am buying Live, I want to get most features for my money, not other products for my money.

I agree completely.
Logic is one of the best sequencers out there, yes, but it's just another DAW and maybe a bit overrated. Midi Timing is very good, yes, audio engine is good, yes, but not really better than Live except that it offers dithering and Live doesn't. The internal instruments are ugly and cluttered. Logic has zillions of useless functions, which just stop you from being creative. I'm fed up with Logic (used it since it was Notator on an Atari!) and although Live still lacks a few features and needs some improvements here and there, it's definitely the most creative DAW out there and for me personally it was the best decision ever to make the transition to Live.
What do you need all the stupid Logic plugins for? And what's the deal with the audio engine? Logic does not sound better or worse than anything else. You either are a good sound engineer and know how to mix a song that has all the room and transparency or you need to learn a bit more about digital signal processing and sound estethics.
The rave in all these forums is only justified by the incredible price tag of Logic 8. But in my opinion, it's not like Apple has raised the bar in terms of the price/performance ratio on the DAW market, it's rather like Apple brings it more in line with the quality and versatility of other sequencers, because it was Logic which was way too overpriced. Now they are selling it at an ridiculously low price which is financed by their hardware, so it's like going from one extreme to another.
Blabla...I guess this will go on forever anyway, so all further topics about Logic: *YAWN*

hambone1 wrote:Why so much whining and comparing Logic to Live? It's apples and oranges... Photoshop and Illustrator... Word and Excel. One's a DAW, the other a live performance instrument, although there is some stuck-on crossover functionality.
Obviously it's a subjective perception but perhaps you better have a word with the marketing dept prior to the release of Live 7 and make sure the words 'THIS ISN'T A DAW' or 'NOT A COMPLETE MUSIC SOLUTION' are featured heavily on the box or in the ads if that's the route they have planned
I'd actually view the whole Logic/Live thing from the other side - Logic is attempting, and failing, to capture the plus points of Live. Ableton, if they so choose, should be looking at how they can capture that DAW market because, like it or not, there is a far greater number of 'DAW Users' than 'Live Performing Instrument Users' - most of which they've already got anyway. The difficulty, which may actually involve changing the real time nature of the engine to some degree or providing an option, is that the requirements of a studio DAW are slightly different. And then of course there's the price
Some people would f*cking bitch and moan if you hung 'em with a new rope...
Ain't that the truth. <stands on gallows> Personally all I want right now is an option for MIDI to work as it does in a DAW rather than a Live Performing Instrument

I did, too. Logic's always been my main workstation, and always will be. Live is an accessory in the studio and an instrument on stage.

don't forget, Apple is a hardware company. They can afford to sell their software at a loss if it means they can ship more hardware in the process. Ableton is dependant on it's software sales only so it makes sense that their stuff is more expensive and divided into multiple components.
I do think Apple's move will force them to react in some way and I think that's what we're seeing now.

if you worked with it on PC (so, up to version 5.5) should should grasp that you do not have a plan what you are talking about.
new EQs with L6/7, new comp with L8 .... but, well, personally I am not in for that stuff - but Logic has a lot of great design plugs (like Space Designer, Delay Designer, RingShifter, etc.) what are great.
for exs - well, it works better with VSL than any other sampler on Mac ..... depends on what you need.
do not know about your experiences with Apple, but I cannot agree. I had quite good experiences .... had worse with other companies.
i mean, personally Logic 8 has nothing to do with live for me - but for people that did not work with each it might be different. And therefore Ableton is affected from the release of Logic8.
And Ableton wanting to provide a studio DAW - so they put themselves into trouble here.
best

Exactly.
Be smart enough to see through Ableton's "complete music solution" marketing hype.

I'm happy with Logic 8 and Ableton 6. On top of that, I'm still using impulse, sampler, and operator! I'm just happy that I can got logic for the same price as reason. I know there's plenty of people here who use Reason and Ableton. So what's the big deal?

the big deal might be that now people starting with music and looking for an affordable DAW in the range of 500 might just take Logic whereas before they might have bought live.
And on the other hand - people that would have shelled out 1000 before for Logic may not spend the other 500 on live.
About the Mac-dongle. It could be hard for PCUsers got somehow understand that, but for MacUsers the Mac is not really a dongle as it is there in the first place anyways. Well, there might be a difference between a MacUser using Logic, a Logic user using Mac and a Mac&Logic-user using exactly that ..... I am a media geak using software on Mac - so, no, it is not a dongle but a tool for what I have no alternative. But that is just my view. I also had to quite using Cubase because it did not work fine on Mac ...
