OT: Anybody excited for Reason v4?
I've had it for a little over a week (the GCs here in town had it in before the release date, and would sell you a copy if they knew you). It's a great update; Thor's a very nice synth (the formant filter's wonderful), ReGroove's really handy for putting that slight random element into your MIDI tracks, and the sequencer's vastly improved. What's not to like?

I think that one area where Reason/Propellerhead really score high is on CONTENT... and as that seems to be an area where Ableton are less good at, it underscores the fact that they can be a useful pair.nebulae wrote:no

I'm definitely digging the Thor sound and specs... but to be honest I can't justify getting it - I dislike the rest of Reason, reWire is a bitch (and let's face it, it always was, and it's mostly because of poor specs done by Propellerheads), plus I've already got shitloads of commercial software that does the same thing.
I really really like formant filters, though....

Reason is possibly the most frustrating application ever invented - on its own its excellent, immensely powerful. And if that all you need then good for you.
For the rest of us who use audio tracks, hardware synths, other plugins etc - its a complete f****** pain in the arse, the user experience is utterly horrible, its a total CPU hog - hence the frustration. It was was just crap on its own as well - noone would give a damn.
But the reality is there seems to be alot of us who used to use it, then for one reason or another needed to use a DAW as well and evntually gave up with reason completely because it was too much of a pain and you could reuse its effects other than by messing around choppnig and loading samples into it etc - bleh!
I wish the props would repackage the damn thing in a way that lets us wrap combinators up as VST/VSTi etc.
Until then - its a waste of HD space.

Reason "a total CPU Hog"
OMGWTFBBQPPL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What planet are you on .
Somewhere between a rock and a hard place is actually nowhere.
It doesn´t need much CPU compared to what it may produce. It´s likeable as a tool, no more, no less. One shouldn´t see it that absolute.
But the new Version.... that Demo is no hot runner at all. Thor sounds cheap and thin and back then where digital synths were in their early stage of development. Lot of parameters though, and maybe you get something useful when leading through good filters. But I guess I´ll stay with Version 3.
And btw., more is not always better. They added instead of refining and optimizing, making smart improvements like midi in/out and audio in would have been right now. Or an alternate, more overlookable possibility to control redrum for more complex structures. Just adding and adding. Bad philosophy.

I think he means that once you need audio and midi out, you need to run two applications which uses up more CPU than one alone.Oscar F wrote: OMGWTFBBQPPL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know what Kahzul is saying too, I'm pretty much in the same boat. I would like to use Reason with Live, but the rewire thing is a pain for me. There are things that Live could do that would make the rewire experience better though. Treat rewire inputs and outputs together so that only one Live track would need to be used. Also, to have VSTi style automation in the arrange window to control the various CCs to automate Reason devices. This is done well enough by Tracktion.

I think Thor sounds good, but I agree there are weaknesses. I had a good play yesterday with Thor and was generally impressed. But there is something not quite right about the Moog filter model and the standard analog oscillator appears to alias quite badly for a new synth.radib wrote: Thor sounds cheap and thin and back then where digital synths were in their early stage of development.
I agree. Although their argument against refining the devices has always been one of backwards compatibility. Even so, they did with the EQ in the mixer with a little switch at the back. I really think that the Sub, an otherwise excellent synth with a great UI, could do with a high quality switch at the back.radib wrote: And btw., more is not always better. Yeh - I wasnt clear - I was referring to the situation where you need to use rewire.Synthbuilder wrote:I think he means that once you need audio and midi out, you need to run two applications which uses up more CPU than one alone.Oscar F wrote: OMGWTFBBQPPL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reason is good, it just doesnt play well with others...

picked up the basic upgrade (4.0) yesterday. Not too shabby. Although I am noticing some issues when rewiring reason as a slave to live 6.10... going to search the bugs forum and see what the deal is.
interesting enough, reason 4.0 supports time signature changes. How does this work in rewire mode? I really have been wishing Live supported this since version 3... I had a band I did some drums and loops for and they wanted the ablility to jam off of sections of their songs; but the catch was there multiple time signature changes, and some really ackward composite time signatures. It really sucked because I was triggering stuff from live and had to move the time signature to 1/8 because it was the common demonator.
