free plugins/softsynths compatible with live

I got a couple of vst's to work, but the majority of them wont.

the component and vst files are sitting next to other vst's that are working, however, they are vst's that I have seen work in live.

why is live restricting the plugins I use?

I really like the Arp's interface, just not quite as immediate
