Very cool Rahlo , great job!
Did you record voices directly into Live?
What gear did you use for production - post mastering....hardware,
software or combination of bouth?
keep I.R.O.C.in' !

Thanks milka! I'm glad you dug what you heard, and appreciate you taking the time to listen! For real.

you asked about gear, so here goes:

For production, I used strictly Live and Reason rewired together (it's hard to imagine using anything else now!), along with an Oxygen 8. Oh, there is one track on the album (an instrumental one) that my dj made with fruityloops about a year ago, but other than that--only live and reason.

I tried doing vox in live, but i'm so used to the way digital performer implements cycle recording that i decided to use audio desk (an audio only version of dp) to record most of the vox, and then exported them into live.

I did record one set of vocals in live b/c i couldn't nail the timing of certain verses. On that one, we slowed down the track by 5 or 6 bpm, recorded my verses, then sped the track back up to its proper tempo. Live and warp markers make that sooooooo easy and painless!

My dj and I both used powerbooks on OS X to produce the tracks and record the vocals--though I did pick up a g5 toward the end of the project to help finish the joints with heavy track counts.

For the vocals, I use a motu 828 mkII along with its built in mic pres, and a neumann tlm-103 (?) mic running through a rnc compressor. Other than the 828, the compressor is the only thing outside of the computer that I used--records, turntables and dj mixer notwithstanding.

Oh yeah, we did use Final Scratch for a lot of the scratching. It's ill when it works and you get the feel of it down!

A friend of mine (neoverse) mixed the whole album in Cubase, and a mastering engineer at his studio mastered it in Pro Tools.

I'd like to get to the point where I could do the whole thing top to bottom, including vox, using just live and reason--I know a lotta cats do. It would simplify my process even more, no doubt.

dag. this is the longest post i've ever made in my life i think. i'll be done now.
peace,

rahlo

yo rahlo, Universal Blackness is really great work. I'll be listening more in-depth when I have some time.

thanks for being strong and putting yourself out there. It is the hardest thing for an artist to do and you're worthy of the attention!

Rahlo....

I am gonna drop you a pm shortly. I am just sorting out a new underground hip hop mixtape......I would like to include on of your joints. Let me know if you are down. I make all my mixes downloadable for free on the net.....and no commercial releases. The mix will have some new Perceptionists material on it, Swollen Members, Rusty Chains, MF Doom, and a host of others.....
if you are down, i will need an mp3 @ 192. You can pick any track....they are all hot in my opinion.

cheers

Steveo,

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond--I'm out on the road.

dude, thanks so much for listening, and also for your words! yeah, it is hard sometimes when you finish something to put it out there, but the response so far has been really positive for this release!

I can't take all the credit for universal blackness though. A cat (neoverse) that I met in the Reason forum went to my site and listened, dug what he heard and asked if he could do a remix. The rest is history, and it looks like we'll be doing a project together here in the near future. So, all that to say I didn't do anything musically on that track other than contribute my vocals.

ennyway, thanks again for your words bro.
