Of course it would be nice, but I don't want anything expensive, modular or of a particular vintage nature that it requires maintenance every other day.
Nord Lead 1..
Simple, effective, great sound..

I can definitely second this choice - for a newb this unit sucks, but if you have your wits about you the software editors are really good - true analog at a VERY low price.

Also DSI Evolver. My precious little box. Very good, too.

Thanks for those recommendations.

Newbie question, but what's the difference between a normal version and a rack version (with no keys)? For example, the Nord Lead X2 and Nord Lead X2 Rack version? How do you control the rack version?

Ahh... So would the new feature in Live 7... the External Hardware Integration thingy make this a lot easier? Presumably it's possible to control say the Nord Rack via another general external MIDI keyboard, either through Live or directly?

JX3P can be had for cheap and an extra bonus if you can get the PG300 programmer... Also to note you cannot not tweak the programmer while the JX3P is in midi mode but with this hack you can use it in midi mode....

This synth is underated and is analogue except for DCO digitally controlled oscillators... I picked mine up for $75 since it was in a fire.... The plastic endcheeks melted off and the pitch bender control is a bit melted cleaned all the soot from the interior and it is still rockin 10 yrs later...
