Come on, it is fake, never considered Van Halen anything special but any musician could handle such situation rather easily. Specially simple tune that you written yourself and played 10000 or more times over decades. I think originally he played those infamous keyboard opening himself ( it used to be 20$ fine at NYC Mannys for playing that, just like the Stairway to Heaven in the guitar section).
He cant be that bad, That thing is too extreme it had to be done on purpose.

It's such a completely dorky song to begin with, I think I might actually like it better this way LOL.

I'm actually impressed with some of the melodies Roth comes up with trying to match the pitch. Some real stinkers too, of course... but on the whole it speaks well of them that they even managed to finish the song.

Another random observation - every other rock and roll band comes back a combined 200 pounds overweight. In VH, the only fat dude is the youngster. Ironic.

Drummer Van Halen - "Look, we'll save a lot of money if we don't hire a keyboardist and just play along with my Mbox."

Eddie Van Halen - "Schweet. Yeah. Only a computer can keep up with me anyhow. We need to save every dime this time out. Next time we tour no one will care. Cash in while the hammer's hot."

David Van Halen - "Yeah, I just inked a deal with Shure. I'm getting an extra $58 a show if I gallop around on a blow-up microphone."

Bassist Van Halen - "I tried to set up a deal like that. So far Jack Daniels hasn't returned my calls."

Eddie Van Halen - "Guys, I just cut hair spray out of the budget. I suggest we just wear our hair short. Remember, money money money. Hang on, you're going to do what on a microphone?"

Drummer Van Halen - "Look, we don't even have to pay top dollar for a sound crew. We can just hire Phillip and Terrence from Guitar Center, the guys who sold me my Mbox. They know how to do all that shit, and as long as we pay them more than $3.15 an hour they'll be overjoyed!"

Eddie Van Halen - "Hot."

Oh, I missed those. BTW. my damn curiosity, I checked some more YouTube from their tour, seems he plays lots of awful , not just out tune, but truly painful stuff every night.
Amazing, he is/was so famous and adored ( for what ? i that stupid 2 hand triplets have nothing to do with music, it is gimmick, trick not technique), there are thousands, not just hundreds of guitarists 100x better then him in LA only. Weird, but I guess so were the 80s.

Ha, $58! Classic.

That inflatable mic routine is like an extra disturbing interpretation of a certain scene in the Who film "Tommy".

farking eediots!!

does anyone here play keys well enough to play along with that synth lead line and see if it's even in pitch but +/- a half step? I'm at work.

the whole guitar ideas are rubbish, those guys should be ashamed. the one thing guitar has over every other instrument is the EASE of transposing keys, it's dead simple on a guitar. Ed tries to transpose around but can't find a match. his pitch is good enough to hear his own guitar out of tune and fix it on the spot, fuck, Eddie can probably tune a guitar faster than I can put one out of tune.

some dimwit on there said "even the drums are tuned to the synth." uhhhh drums aren't tuned to a pitch, that's retarded.

I don't have perfect pitch, nowhere near it but I'm amazed nobody's figured this one out, or maybe it's just the idiots with opinions drowning out the few that can tell.

And in a few moments, Tone Deft will break out of his timid shell and tell us all how he really feels.

 <-- seriously.

this is audio damnit!!! serious business!!! nothing kicks sand up my twat faster than people making shit up over audio and sounding like a fool.

if the keyboards are off a half step or two the problem was somewhere else.

oh, and the guy saying that in Pro Tools you'd have to start a new session to change sample rate... why the fuck would they launch Pro Fools to play an audio file?? render it out and use Winamp FFS!!!

OK OK OK, I'll go have some fun at lunch and return in one of those 'good moods' I've so often heard about.
