I personally think they added 64 bit summing as a marketing tool to shut you guys up.

L7 sounds slightly deeper and slightly clearer to my ears. Does that mean it sounded bad before? Not at all. In fact, I can't say there was a big difference in the mix engines of Live and the other guys. But with 64-bit mix engine, it sounds better to my ears (as does Operator, EQ8, Saturator, and Compressor), and that's a good thing. Whether it's marketing or not, I don't really care, because to me, Live as never had to compete with other "real" DAWs.

Live 7 = "pure mojo". Plays like buttah. Etc.

I still have 4 vintage copies of Live 2, but they're too valuable to take on the road LOL.

The same set (created in L6) opened and immediately rendered with no dither and no HiQ mode FX: http://www.virb.com/live7vslive6

Listen in particular to the hi-hats, especially the ping-pong delays decay. Better definition. Also, the bass swells on beat 3 (after 0:19) don't get as tubby.

I'd characterize it as generally having more aural space for things to exist.

I checked out your samples before I found this thread or heard anyone's commentary including yours.

I listened back and forth for a few minutes and this is exactly what I heard:

The 7 sample sounds cleaner and punchier, especially noticable on the high end -- and especially to me I hear a much cleaner 'pop' on the melody notes (bell tones) ...

There is more of a sense of 'air' around the entire piece.

I totally hear this and it is not in my head :) If you played the two samples side by side without telling me which, I would know the 7 one for sure right away.
Not sure what that is attributable to at this point without doing some testing. Waiting on the final version before any effort goes into that process.

Yes it would be really great to know this. Were you using the new Live 7 compressor and EQ 8 vs the old ones for this test?

The quality of the compression in particular could be the cause of the clear punchy top on the delays imo ...

Exactly. I have a very hard time believing the sound difference is attributable to the bit depth or the audio engine in general. Further, as some have pointed out as a possibility, I didn't adequately prep this set to test just audio. My point was originally not a 'quality of audio' argument per se but more about opening your L6 projects in L7 and having the expectation that they will sound the same. This has not been the case for me. Meaning, some backwards compatibility is lost somewhere along the way. While in the case I posted it may have been, subjectively, an improvement, it seems hard to guarantee this positive result without more investigation.

Of course, I will wait for my release version to arrive to do the sums (no pun) and post any meaningful discoveries.

I was assuming he at least did a direct bounce with 6, then opened the set in 7 and bounced that with no changes.

Nogi?

Exactly. Created in L6 then rendered, then open in L7 with no user changes and render (same settings, no dither). Different result.

They sound the same to me.

Have you tried playing them both together, but switching the polarity ("phase") one one to see if they completely cancel?
