Read Tarekith's articles on Mastering and Leveling and you may not need another editor for these tasks. I know my stuff sure improved by following his advice. Here are the URLs:

That looks more like it's slanted towards improving audio for AV editors...but maybe Audition has been co-opted into this for OS X? Dunno...

The new Logic - which bundles ST Pro, and which I really like (for the first time in Logic's history) is also a very appealing buy for a zillion additional reasons.

Really though, as soon as DSP Q get the UB vers up and running, I'm back there.

you are right. this soundbooth seems more like its aimed towards people who use premiere, dreamweaver, and flash.....but once you being to tame this beast you can design your sounds much easier on soundbooth than on audition.

when i get time i will try to write a tutorial on it.

Can you use bootcamp and run your windows programs like Audition that way?

My friend does that to run Soundforge or Wavelab on mac, he could not get on with Peak or Soundtrack, but like anything else, this does not mean they are poor, it's just a personal subjective choice.

Logic kinda sucks at audio editing even compared to Live.
I started working with Logic Pro just because it seems better on my Mac's CPU than Live plus great plugins. But I start missing simple way Live is handling editing. What I miss the most is seeing grid through regions the way it is in Live......

worse comes to worse...just bootcamp to audition..............is bootcamp free now?

Boot Camp is one hell of a process, tho I'm trying to get Parallels to work with Boot Camp so I can run two OS's at the same time. I'm not in the mood to buy new software, so I'll see around.

I'm working around with the Soundbooth trial atm and it seems a bit odd, but the tasks and effects are already familiar to me (since I've been using Audition), so I'm sticking around to it for a while.

Sountrack Pro 2 (bundled with Logic Studio) is mostly quite wonderful, and rocks as an external editor for Live.

I did get pissed when it exhibited a weird bug when I tried to use it to edit an audio clip in an open Logic Project. But after reinstalling it, seems ok.

But, I like soooo much better than Peak Pro, it has been worth putting up with the re-install.
Plus it lets you automate ANY or 10 plugin parameters all at once. I do tons of audio editing and some of its features are things I've long-wanted in an editor.

Editing snaps and crackles out can be done at the sample level, where, unlike Peak, each sample has a node representing its 'volume' level. In fact I had to do this after I rendered a cool glitchy file made with Pluggo, that had some unwanted transients. It worked great. Using the nodes was much easier for me that trying to find them in Peak and draw them out with the pencil, which I have done a lot of in the past.

STP2 was the main reason that I got the Logic Studio package (@ $149 academic, I couldn't pass it up).

If you get STP there may be some weird bugs but I used to own Peak and at one point after tweaking every setting under the sun in it, I could never get it to play any of my plugins without stuttering. After that I wrote Bias off - $379 down the big toidy - the problem never got fixed.

STP2 has LOTS of included fully-working plugins (almost all same as Logic Studio, I believe) that sound great, INCLUDING the parametric SUB-BASS generator plugin! The AutoFilter also sounds Killer - I've even used it to further beef up analog percussive my Electrocomp 101. There's also an EQ Match to graft an existing EQ thumbprint onto asoundfile.

Cons: no VST effects access.

You might also want to check out DSP-Quattro, which allows you to run VST instruments.
