If you are just getting into this or considering your first set of audio monitors then by all means go with a set of M-Audio monitors.
Many people on here will tell you not to and will slag off M-Audio (many with good reason), but many people here are also working on a professional or semi-professional level and as such have more exacting needs and more than likely their budget is built into their business so a large purchase, such as a set of high end monitors, will eventually pay for itself.
Others are just doing it for the love but have been doing it for many many years and as such have developed a more critical ear and can better justify such a large purchase.
If you are just starting out and (or) on a budget then go out and grab a set of M-Audio monitors, or something comparable, for a coupe of hundred bucks to get you started. Then, as time goes on and you find yourself requiring a more accurate monitoring system you go and buy one.
I've been doing this for about 5 years and have been using a set of M-Audio DX-4's for the past year or 2 and they suit me fine. They sound much better than the stereo speakers I was using for the first three years.
Sure, it would be cool to have something bigger and better and a set of Precision 8's really would look sexy with my setup, but what the fuck would I be doing spending $1300 on a set of monitors? If I had money to burn then sure, what the hell, but I don't, and I don't earn my living doing this (and have no intention to) so it's not like they are going to pay for themselves.
So yeah, my advice would be to grab what you can afford, get a decent controller and focus on learning the tools, your playing, and unleashing your creativity upon the world.
