Macs are still incredibly overpriced for what they do but in saying that i will be buying another mac desktop in 2008.
Go to dell ive had a good experience, :) and for value for moeny and lots of power i recommend them.
There is a lot of justifiable hype surrounding macs but pcs are gonna do the same for you if not just with a wee bit more of a quirky route to b where you wanna go
spec for spec the macpro is chepaer than the dell equivilent most of the time or not alot in it so that is just a common over the top statement. Yes u can not buy a cheap mac but u can buy cheap PC's I have been an IT tech for years and the thing that most Mac users prefer is simply the fact that all the drivers and hardware and software are made by the same people so you generally have very little veriation so less problems with sorting hardware out.
After years of stuffing about with Music apps I personally found it very nice not to have to fiddle and try and get XP to work with my apps. Yes for sure if you are careful and choose the right combination of hardware the pc can sure work very well.. unless you are trying it on Vista of course which is something we remove and load XP on any new systems for our corporate clients as they hate it but thats another story.
Bottom line is this, use whatever you like that works for you. I am loving Leopard and my macbookpro for recording.
I have XP under VMware Fusion and bootcamp but have no need of it. I can run fruitloops perfectly under Fusion and generally have less hassles and a more productive life these days. The music is everything and the computer should not be a problem or hassle. If you get XP running like that and it works for you and your happy then thats all that really matters isn't it?

Just to tell

Hp have a buisness line for laptop ( Don't have the model here sorry)

the are shipped with win xp pro pretty well installed and the hardware specs are really acceptable ( dual core, 4 gigs of ram, ect)

I know 2 guys running live gigs on these lappy without any probs since a couple of months.

The price is also pretty reasonnable, not sure but I think it's on order at the hp shop only.

Just my 2 cents

Lots of good advice from folks like Jaime && leedsquieteman. I love the objectivity. I love this forum!

I've been using a PC (Dell laptop) for my gigs n' stuff. Its old, but I've never had any probs with it or XP (Vista's a different story). I'm going to buy a new machine in the next couple years, but I just can't justify paying a ton for a mac. They're pretty, and their hardware is solid, but I agree with Jamie. I've looked at some HP laptops, and they look pretty sweet. (Appearance wise).

the MBP is considerably more than the Dell XPS.

Let's look at the comparison
Dell XPS M1710 - 2.4 Ghz Intel Core2Duo 2.4 Ghz, 17" UXGA LCD, 2 GB ddr 667 Mhz, 160 GB 7200 rpm, Nvidia Geforce Go 7950 512 MB. 8xDVD-RW
Price - CDN$ 2659

Apple MBP - 2.4 Ghz INtel Core2Duo 2.4 Ghz, 17" LCD, 2 GB ddr 667 Mhz, 200 GB 7200 rpm, NVidia Geforce 8600M GT 256MB, 8XDVD-R. Price - CDN$ 3099

Difference - MBP has a 40GB HDD advantage but the Dell has a better graphics card that has double the graphic memory and costs 340 dollars less.

In Canada, Apple never get close to the price of Dell. The reason I got the Inspiron 9100 instead of a G4 Powerbook (Apple's best laptop at the time) was that it cost $327 less, had double the memory, a 7200 rpm HD instead of a 5400 rpm HD, a Radeon 9700 with 128 MB against a Radeon 9600 with 64 MB memory and it's 3.2 Ghz P4 processor just smoked the ageing G4 on pro audio applications. I like Apple's computers and think they are awesome now they're on INtel but you always have to pay a premium.
