yeah, but you buy crap, you get crap results. the sound card is the one of the most important things you can buy for your studio, after the computer, and the DAW software, maybe more important than your speakers. why cheap out on a cornerstone of your studio?

I just have to add that the firewire ports are really stable on the Macbook Pros (firewire seems to be an issue on PCs). Since the Macs only have 2 usb ports you might want to look into the firewire option. You can always use a USB hub but those aren't always stable and your audio interface isn't something you want to be worried about.

so USB for PCs and Firewire for Macs as the rule of thumb when people ask? speed differences, platform aside is negligible, right? I don't remember the fine points.

well it's sad but I have happily used my FW410 for about 4 years now under XP, but apparently getting a new computer was not such a great idea
all this upgrading one thing means you have to upgrade EVERYTHING is infuriating
why the hell I didnt get the macbook is beyond me - 13in screen or not

yeah a few, generally USB 2.0 even isn't as good for larger audio cards. RME who make slightly better software for PC (Digicheck is PC only), basically said that with getting larger data throughput in USB VS Firewire, firewire always wins.
This is why so many add on USB audio interfaces in controller keyboards and other devices etc. are two channel I bellieve.
The biggest problem with firewire I've heard about on PC is that the laptops tend to offer the less useful 4 pin interface, which doesn't offer power to devices attached. Firewire 400 and 800 both power the 2.5" HD enclosure I have, if I use the eSATA or USB connection I need a wall wart.
