there is also the possibility that you are experiencing the processor throttling issue... this is more or less to do with the cpu frequency throttling being setup a bit too soft, so the cpu speeds don't step up and down smoothly enough for apps that have critical timing issues (like audio of course)...

do a search on "coolbook" in the Ableton forums for some threads on this...

Thanks for all the info guys, i'm going to check it all out to optimize my machine.

But right now i'm quite satisfied, i've upgraded to 6.07 and i havn't reached any spikes or anything yet, because let's face it, as long as it's 100% reliable i dont give a shit if the processor load is 60% or 20%. It's probably the processor and the duo core support that live 6 brings that had a big influence on this processor (it didn't matter as much on my duo core pc). I will upgrade to 7 if the new update gets good reviews.

Yeah it was definitely Live 5.2. 5.2 didn't support dual processors.

Hello everyone,

I think I must be in the same boat here. Recent fatherhood made me take a break from music for the last couple years (I was on Live 4.1.4) but recently I decided to get back into things. I bought a 24" 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 gigs ram before xmas and just installed my old Live 4.1.4 on it last night. I was a bit puzzled when I saw my performance meter hitting 50% on the "Lesson1" song. Then when I booted up my old powerbook (1Ghz G4 with 768 MB ram) the same "Lesson1" passage peaked at around 15%. Uggghhhh. Is that right? I kind of figured performance would at least be the same if not better on the new machine. So do I have to bite the bullet and get the new version? And will version 7 work faster on my new iMac than on my old powerbook? And will version 7 on the iMac be fasterthan version 4 on my old powerbook? I hope so. I guess my fear is that the new version could be heavier because of all the new extra features... but I also hope that optimizations and clever programming have made for a speedy sleek beast.

Any suggestions on what to do? I was really hoping my new machine would grant me a lot more power in Live, and I don't want to plunk down the $200 if its not going to get me much.

Only versions 5.2 and above are going to work on an Intel Based Mac.

Thanks for the reply... my live 4.1.4 works on my intel based mac, just not very efficiently. So do you mean only version 5.2 and up will work *well*? And by "working" should I expect those higher versions (5.2 and beyond) on the new imac to perform a given set better than performance of that same set on my 1gHz powerbook using an old version (live 4.1.4)?

Yes, you will see a gigantic increase in the processing power available to you

your 4.1.4 works on your Intel Mac, but to do so it is using Rosetta (emulated) mode, and not running as a native Intel app...

odd that you would have gotten a computer so recently and it didn't have Mac OS X 10.5., leopard installed or at least packaged in the box - was it used or a reproduction unit?

glad to hear that Live 6.0.7 helped smooth things out, as others suggested in the future if you run into a similar CPU problem, you can launch Activity Monitor and see which other processes on your computer are taking system resources.
