+1 on this feature.
As to why it's like that, I think it has to do with Live originally being a performance software, not a studio software, and requiring key combinations instead of single-letter keystrokes since many people might use the keyboard for triggering clips, FX, etc.
So it actually makes sense that it would be setup this way, but there should be user options to reconfigure, IMO.

actually, calling people douches is more douchey than calling RTFM unwarranted... YMMV.

This is a point of contention with me as well, actually. Some (many?) of the key commands are just stupid and completely unintuitive, like split being Ctrl-E or the Pencil being Ctrl-B. At least make them customizeable for chrissakes!
And I will say that this is one area where Reaper seriously kicks ass; not only are the customizeable key commands virtually limitless, you can also very easily make macros which can have many actions all happen at once with a simple keybinding.

Td, you still don't make any sense. Again, SMFD.
What the hell does the manual have to do with implementing functionality which is not offered besides confirming?
man what assholes. What isd the point of taking the time to post on a forum when you get the response RTFM? It didn';t even make sense, I mean, your response isn't even relevant, and everyone else agrees. these are bizarre, unconfigurable key commands

if you were to read the fm you would realize, we need single keys to be freely assignable via the key map. taking this functionality out of live would be a very bad thing

that doesn;t matter, I would be happy with 2 key-commands. My post was regarding user programmable key commands. RTFM is a moronic answer in almost every cicrumstance.
you three can suck it
MY balls!!!
I already worked it out using applescript. RTFM yourself! I'll keep making music.
