Ideally I would like to see the macros start at 2 of them and have either a +- to increase or decrease by pairs or draggable.

+1.

I like the idea of 8 to start and then you can add 2 at a time. maybe the macros could resize as you add more, or you could scroll them like you can in a drum rack.

preferably in foldable banks of 8, so that the view remains as is, then you can fold out another 8, and so on

This is pretty good idea; I often make racks that have only one or two parameters so having fewer controls is good for me.

I think that more than eight macros would probably be unneccessary if the macros themselves were more powerful; that is if you could send arbitary combinations of them to parameters; e.g. let filter_cutoff = m1 + 0.1*m2*m3. Then you could really make an interesting instrument with an "opinionated sound" (I think I stole this term from Chris Randall of Audio Damage).

I think it should be like the drum rack view selector, and Live should accept program change messages and allow you to change with program change buttons on MIDI devices

... and to be able to save macro mappings as templates so that common instrument design is easier.

+1 Love to able to control sampler/simpler when I work with my midi controller and drum racks. Since there's no way to re-arrange the automaps for ableton devices, this is the way to go +111111

It would be better if we could ADD knobs to the rack manually

I'm happy with the present stuff, you're not forced to map to the rack, You can midi map directly to the instrument.

Multiple banks of 8 macro controls would do the trick nicely: keep auto-assign focus if the user wants, and have MIDI learnable knobs to switch between many pages of 8 knobs.

Or alternatively go in the direction of the Drum Rack pad view control, like has already been suggested.

I just spent ages looking for a button to add more macros... I'm shocked you can't have more than 8! This is really annoying...

a ruleset to the macros would rock so hard man.
if then statements for the win.
