but there is a point as to the 'born in a vacuumness' of it. When the first video demo appeared, I recall it didn't even have ANY midi interface.

Hey, sorry to revive an old thread... but my wife surprised me with an early Christmas present (she's terrible at keeping secrets!) and I find myself the owner of a shiny new Tenori-on.

I see its genius. A few simple interesting rules (modes) that can be put together in interesting ways. However, I'm mostly interested in using it to trigger VSTis in Live 7. I tried this yesterday and I had some weird problems.

Problem one: Loaded up Kontakt 3. Had the track set to look at my midi interface and set the midi channel to "All Channels." It seemed like each layer only triggered the first (midi channel 1) instrument loaded up in Konktakt. If I loaded up another instance I was then able to get it to set track one to midi 1 and track 2 to midi 2 and it worked fine. Sending the output of the Tenori-on to a Roland SonicCell didn't give me the same issue at all and I was able to operate it with multiple midi channels.

Problem 2: I want Ableton to be the master, but have the Tenori-on spitting out a sequence that I make up on the fly. So I'm using MIDI in and out. I'm getting some bizarro feedback or something that causes Live to grind to a horrible halt after a little while. The Tenori-on will freeze up too. Seems like a MIDI feedback issue, but I can't figure out why it's happening. If anyone has done this with success I'd love to hear what settings you used. I was using a Novation Remote25 SL as a MIDI interface.

0) The only reason my wife would give me some music gear would be if she got to smash it over my head so not sure why I'm trying to help you, but anyway...

1) You might try sending the input from the Tenori to a MIDI "feeder track", then sending the midi out from that to the ultimate destination.

2) When you configure the device in prefs, if you want to trigger stuff as if it were a remote interface you set it to "remote" (then use midi learn mode to trigger clips), and if you want to send notes to track to set it to "track". If you want to *send* sync you set it to sync, but if not you don't.

2a) If you want it to *receive* sync then you need to set that in the prefs as well, but leave the track option *off*, because you are not sending notes to it. That is the most likely source of midi feedback.

Ouch! I've been there though, trust me. I hope you can convince her that you're not playing music to get away from her, but to get to your music. When you come back you're happier and happy people are more fun to be with. My wife wanted a high end electric kettle this year and although it doesn't really interest me at all I'm happy that she has stuff going on in her world that don't include me but that I benefit from. She loves to cook and I get to eat, I love to make music and she gets to listen. Win/win.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try these tonight. I thought I had that interface set up to send sync but not track (I'm having the Tenori-on be the slave) and receive track but nothing else, but maybe I'm screwing up somewhere.

And who ever thought that they might be able to launch 256 clips that is not the case.

Left to right the columns represent time. It will trigger the same midi note in every row so you could launch 16 clips maybe.

get a monome.

What I like about the Tenori-on is that it's a set of 6 simple rules (modes) that can be combined to make very complex outputs. Just some of the things I was able to do very quickly by creating sequences in score mode and then changing the loop length to create poly rhythmic results was amazing. I was able to understand and master each mode in about a half hour or less and other than a hiccup with controlling VSTis in Live it was smooth sailing.

with the monome you could just use one app with 6 different modes and just stick to that if you wanted to. I mean I pretty much only use molar anymore and thats just a step sequencing looping app.

am I the only one that thinks the tenori on is fuc**ng annoying to look at? I mean it's like epilepsy waiting to happen. like if you took flashing christmas lights and put them in a little square box and let them do their thing.

Yeah, as suspected the track/sync and remote settings were not my problem. My setting were as you described. I'm not sure what it is. I'll be going along all fine and dandy and then all of the sudden Live will lock up and become unresponsive. I see the sync indicator is still blinking but I get the "Not Responding" message and nothing... and then it's as if all the midi notes that were supposed to be happening will all of the sudden spill out like gumballs after you smash the gumball machine.

OK. Well. I figured out that all my problems somehow stem from the MIDI out of the Novation. I hooked up an old MOTU Fastlane USB MIDI interface and it works perfectly. I still have no idea why the Novation behaved so bad... I think it has something to do with the fact that it's sending it's own clock as well.
