you do this for a living? there are thousands of rockers out there who use these things because they could give a shit about computer recording. totally viable solution that would sound perfectly reasonable over a big ol' PA.

I was totally being a douchebag by suggesting there are other options besides Live worth looking into. And did I point out Live's strengths? yes, but that is just further tricksy douchebaggery.

Obviously, when a guy named "Sales Dood" tells you you should spend $5000, and to just forget about the $300 option, he has your best interests at heart.

but nah, screw the drum machine, i would say screw reason also, but that other thread today really has me thinking about ditching live...

live would be good though.. they have all there background tracks set in session, key map scenes, and what ever the choir feels like singing, they can simply trigger the appropreate scene.

and the guy did ask for a dream setup, so who would avoid rme in that situation,

perhaps the best bet is to get live and a 909?

well, from how I read the OP, they don't need to use a laptop Live at all.
I assume all the beats they make on their computer will be played through a CD player in the church.

So they just need something that'll make some drumbeats... not perform them. In which case, a multi-input/output soundcard is going to be majorly overkill. But, hey, what else would a church spend its money on?

Look, the guy did some research, discovered a program called Live which has a great reputation for live usage on stage, he/she comes here and you guys tell him to buy an Alesis.

I have nothing against drum machines. I've heard lots and lots of them.

I've also worked with a lot of houses of worship. They want good sounding stuff. They have serious services every week. They have to work to keep their sounds fresh and lively and if you buy a limited piece of gear like the Alesis SR-18, you're not going to get what you need.

But go ahead. Sit there at your computer all day and fire bullets into the knees of potential new Live customers. The world is a better place.

I have walked amongst the unclean heathens here and have never lost my path to God. I'm proof it's possible to ignore the evil on the internet, if I can do it, so can OP.

McDude - wait, so in your opinion NONE of the drum machines out there should be played over a PA?? I'm not talking the TR series stuff. recently a coworker wanted to fire his drummer and I started talking about Live, the dude's a rocker, he has ZERO interest in DAWs and won't acknowledge electronic music at all. we shopped around a bit and decided on the Boss stuff, he used to use that stuff and they do not sound bad. there's completely a market for that type of device.

This Thread is Funny! One of the very few which made me laugh loud.

If the man from the church is still listening and not scared of you:

Live is, in my opinion, the ideal software for your needs. You can create backing tracks, and you have very good options to play it for your audience.
But - you will have to spend some time to get into it.

as for gear - essentially, you need Live and an pc from the last two years. That would be enough i guess.
For a nice Setup, you want an up to date Laptop with core 2 duo Processor and at least 2 GB of ram and a firewire soundcard like the Presonus Firebox, for example.

For a GREAT setup, you want Live, a macbook(pro) and a soundcard from motu or RME (there is much other good gear, but you can t hardly go wrong with this)

My Advice would be to start simple and buy better Gear when you know exactly what you want.
