I finally figured it out. After reformatting to vista ultimate, re installing ableton and pro tools, downloading sp1, and getting the cs2 update for pro tools 7.4, I am now finally able to record again. I'm still having issues using midi controller of any kind. I have to connect an external usb hub to even get them working. Even at that there are still some issues with auto learn. So $2000 dollars later, and 3 months after receiving my laptop I am now able to record away from home! Thank you all for your help, happy praise the technology gods Ab7 is amazing!
Two technics 1210 turntables, alot of guitars, 2gig Sony vgz fz290, 2gig frankenstein pc, mbox, ableton, flstudio, recycle, the infinity gauntlet, and alot of spare time..

At the high risk of dragging up the usual monsters, and sounding like a broken record:
This is the kind of post during which I scratch my head in wonder.
Why spend 2000 on a vista laptop? I can almost understand buying an xp laptop, there are lots of advantages (price, availability of software, other stuff im sure...)
But why not just buy a macbook? That would have been 3 months of time saved, regardless of what kind of interface you went for.
If I wuz you, id sell sell sell, then buy buy buy.
Unless you love tinkering around with broken software, stay away from Vista. It makes me feel ill. Maybe in a few years it'll be ok.
Sorry about this post, I know its a bit boring and maybe im turning into a mac fascist.

Jesso: It is CHEAPER to buy a laptop with vista than a laptop with xp. Then you can clean it up and smack xp on if you want to.

Weird fact, but true. At least at the dealers here

Its not that weird. Microsoft are just pushing vista relentlessly. Regardless of whether people actually want to use it. 2000 is still quite a lot for a laptop, and im sure the sony machine is pretty good. Shame about the OS.

I had previously considered purchasing a macbook. But the issue was with flstudio and adobe audition 3 not working on mac. So i opted for a windows pc, which was actually 1500 at a discounted price, the additional 500 I spent was for ab7 upgrade, extra ram, and remote sl midi controller. Vista does indeed suck though, and I discovered the drivers for xp are not yet available on this laptop. Too bad, but i guess I'll work with what I have.

I'm running Vista on 2 systems Running Live, REAPER, & Protools if needed really well. Lower latency then i had with XP. I use a konnekt 24d Firewire interface. Has a nice Vista driver.

I switched do to getting a new laptop & PC tower designed for Vista. Downgrading to XP is like shooting yourself in the foot.
New computers have vista in mind. Most have 1/2 ass XP drivers/Software integration. Where do you think the bug fixing effort/new development in Live, your fav plugs & Drivers are? It's currently in Vista&leopard. XP is now 2nd in line. Not only in audio software developers eyes but Micro$ofts. It's only going to get worse for XP users. Every new version of software/Driver will be further from XP.
I used XP for years. It worked great. Now i have Vista Boxes with videocards made for Vista, audio interface drivers & DAW software made to run in vista. It's working great as well.
I had to tweak Vista just like i had to tweak XP. But now i get things like superfetch, Aero gpu support. & a black GUI :) (Hey i like it).
Well thats my view. Works with my rig & i have allot of hardware plugged into this beast.

Plus midi crap & plugin madness
