Actually, speaking about keyboards....

Since I'm trying to get as much functionality of whatever can be hacked together to achieve this, I'm also thinking about alternatives besides the Lemur.
BCR2000 crossed my mind, but it would only be able to display 2 scenes at a time.
PadKontrol came up too, but it has the same problem.
The monome version would be a slight alteration of the lemur version, instead of colors it would use on/off or blinking.

The only way I can think off to "bring it to the masses" is a display that shows a MIDI Keyboard. With all data displayed as colored keys.
But I don't think I got the programming chops for that.
It would also have the disadvantage of having too much unused keys you can accidentally hit.

Right after typing the previous paragraph I got the following idea.
Instead of using a display, one could use a row of LED's that are mounted on a MIDI Keyboard above the keys (if the design allows it).
That could be a fairly cheap DIY project.
And a pretty good visual indication (in theory).

is what I'm thinking which for less than $200 including USB+ MIDI is not too shabby.
Even though the whole keyboard as trigger matrix is unappealing to me; it has been unappealing since early nineties when Roland introduced their RPS thing.

That definitely sucks. I got an Mc-909 here.
It has some many good and clever things. But it sounds like total crap.
Using the keyboard is the least elegant way, but its a way nonetheless.

Lemur = screen

I wouldn't put Lemur in the same category as a screen. Sceens do not have munti touch. Screens can not me manipulated directly.

The problem with looking at a screen is that is really all you can do with it. A lemur is a screen that can be touched and moved. So it is a controll surface like a Monodeck. Only it is more versatile and the "knobs and buttons" dont stick out of the surface. The musician-interface interation is still the same though, especially from the audience's perspective.

Putting the Lemur in the same categoy as a screen is like putting a Red Flyer wagon in the same category as a Mercialago. They will both get you to the store, but the Lambo will be a lot more fun to watch with the right hands behind the wheel.

This is the one thing that makes me drool every time I see the monodeck II.
In combination with Racks and this would be a potentional killer.

After having a hands-on with an Xone3D all I can say is: spacing of the upper knobs and buttons - stoopid stoopid stoopid! All that blank panel space up there, and yet you can't comfortably fit your fingers between the knobs since they're so close together (and I'm a skinny fucker, too)

Agreed, I was so bummed out they botched that, had planned up selling Xone62 for one initially.
