These bothered me at first but the more I use Sampler the more I like its simple approach. There's always Kontakt if you need these things but the simplicity of Sampler makes a great sound design tool in a way that Kontakt never will be.

Yes, yes, yes. I've been sayin' it for ages.

And we're not necessarily taking about tempo sync timestretch, it's more about having a mode where pitch can change independent of time. Also a global sample stretch parameter, like impulse has, is a must.

I think these two things would go hand in hand. You set it to timestretch mode. Then your sample plays across the keyboard at different pitches, but the same duration. The global stretch will affect that duration.

The technology is already embedded in ableton and stretch is even in their first free drum sampler, so what gives....

I'm pretty new to using Sampler and have found this also to be pretty annoying.

It would be great to be able to sync a messed up loop in time with Ableton.

I can't believe this function isn't already in considering that one of Ableton's selling points is the time streching/syncing capabilites.

Are there any tips for working around this?
Is the only way to resample as audio and then warping to fit?

nobbystylus wrote:+1 been said many times before... its the most baffling omission from sampler.
My list of fundamental Sampler bafflements reads as follows:

1) No multiple, assignable outputs.
2) No per-sample (or per-zone, per-layer, etc...) filter. Only a global one.
3) No per-sample (or per-zone, and so on...) ADSR. Only a global one.
4) No timestretching.
5) No MIDI/macro assignable start/end points.

Numbers two and three can be arguably alleviated to an extent by grouping multiple Samplers inside a rack and building layers with different filter/ADSR configurations that way. However, in my opinion, number one can't be sufficiently remedied by racks, even though one often encounters that advice. Juggling samples between multiple instances instead of trivial routing... Meh.

I love Sampler for what it can do, but still...
1-3 are seriously needed.

NNXT has 1-3 and it rocks. Having to rely on racks for those things is way to tedious, where in Reason you just select the sample then edit the filter/envelope or change the output.

To be honest, I'm not sure why people ask to be able to sync a loop within sampler. There are enough ways to do this. Just using clips is the obvious way. Or for rhythmic parts, slicing to a single sampler is good too.

I can't speak for everyone, but when I say timestretch I mean two things: 1 - A stretch knob like impulse has. Especially useful for drums but could make cool granular sounding instruments as well.
2 - An option to keep the sample time (playback speed) independant of pitch when you play up and down the keyboard. This requires timestrech because, for example, playing higher pitches requires that the sample be stretched to maintain the same duration.
If either of these were possible in sampler, the other would be possible as well. And stretch is already possible in impulse. Kontakt is a good example of having a mode where transposition doesn't affect the sample duration.
It's very important for certain things like avoiding chipmunky sound when playing higher notes or if the sample has an envelope which you want to stay the same whatever note you play, rather than getting to slow when pitching down. With a mode that keeps time and pitch independant, you can make cool instruments out of just one sample.

See above.

I've just been checking out garyboozy's (see earlier in thread) suggestion for using loopstart modulation to create timestretching.... its totally amazing.... some artefacts yes...but its really junglist and snares stretched beyond a bar sound absolutely incredible. sampler = granular synth. Mapping lfo rate to a macro makes it even madder. Switching lfos is pretty wild as well.
So no its not transparent timestretching, but its as good as kontakt 1 and more importantly its really sick.

just to keep some negative vibes going - itsa downer loop length can't be midi controlled/macro-mapped

Sure, that's a cool effect. But it's hard to set that up to play at normal speed and sound normal at the route note and time stretch depending on how much it's pitched, so as to keep the duration the same. The other important thing is that it takes up a modulation source destination on the AUX envelope. I'd rather just have a straight forward timestretch mode and have that open.

The reason I really want this in sampler is because to me kontakt is for the complex multi-instruments and I like sampler for the sound design and using your own samples to make simple instruments. It would really well suited to making patches out of one sample that you record yourself because it easy to just drag right in. But making instruments from single samples works much better if you can set the time to be independent of pitch.

Does anyone know of a VST sampler that has time stretching? I want each note on the keyboard to play the sample for the same time but different pitch.
