Would that work? Sorry if it's a daft question but clicking on a control and hitting up or down does nothing. Does this work differently? If so it may be ideal for what I want.

Well that's what I get for reading the directions! I'll test it when I get home. I'm sure it works fine then.

You can download the manual from the Novation site if you want to find out more about it. I think it's a killer and they are going to sell a shitload of them!

Just started playing with my Nocturn - You don't have to click the speed dial for it to work. Just have to hover the mouse over a parameter/knob/fader and it controls it - you do need to then touch the speed dial to release the dial and get your mouse back - because it basically takes over the mouse function - but the knob is touch sensative - so you literally just touch it to release - then on to the next control.
