Tassman rules

I went ahead and took the plunge after I got the Abe's letter. Did the crossgrade though.

First impressions: So far so good. I really like it. I don't have tonnes of time for sound design anymore (unfortunately) so whatever helps me be productive is a boon. The opening tutorials are a must.

It's much easier to grok than R5 in part, I suspect, because your options are a bit more limited. But fewer options are not a bad thing if you actually USE those options. (As opposed to being overwhelmed into inaction as I am with Reaktor.)

I too am a bit concerned about the period since the last update. I am hopeful that a) they are doing deals because a new version is near; and/or b) they plan to keep the thing compatible with the next few OSs.

I remember trying it once and thinking the sound was great but the GUI bugged me. I hated not being able to scroll with trackpad/mousewheel, and I don't think I could resize the window either.

I wonder if someone could use the ableton coupon at the same time as getting the reaktor discount. It's 199 usd for reaktor users, so would that mean I could use the coupon to get it for 49 usd?

My first exposure to Tassman came with the DXi version bundled with Sonar 1XL (2001). It was cool sounding, but the modwheel wouldn't record. After contemplating for a year or so, I decided to upgrade to the full version as the VST version correctly recognized modwheel (and you got a free upgrade to 3 when it was released). However, it was PACE protected, and the installer had PACE drivers that would crash XP hard on the reboot after the install; the new drivers were hidden away on the AAS site. After spending half the night repairing my system (can we say reformat ), I start it up to discover my authorization quota's been exceeded. Fortunately, a phone call to AAS fixed that.

Version 3 came out in 2003. They recommended you remove V2 first before installing, so I did. Imagine my horror when the modules I used for all my v2 synths (the ring modulator in particular) weren't in v3, and that you couldn't activate v2 again after you'd upgraded. I'd made some requests such as last note priority for mono synths; they said it'd be in an update.

Fast forward to 2004 and T4. The priority still hasn't been fixed (it's high note still), none of the other issues had been fixed and they want $99 to upgrade. I figured I'd give them one last chance.

A year later, with no relief in sight, I deregistered Tassman and swapped it for a Moog Modular V that a guy on KVR was selling, and haven't looked back

I like some of the sounds in Tassman, and I like their physical models. However, there'd have to be some significant changes to v5 before I'd think of getting it again. YMMV...
