I still find myself doing a lot of work with clip envelopes in session as a quick way of creating variations and roughly blocking out soon-to-be arrangements.

A couple of questions for Robert:

1. Can we ever hope to see looped waveform display for unlinked envelopes?

This would make detailed editing (especially of Sample Offset) sooo much faster. Also,

2. Will the play position cursor for unlinked REX envelopes ever behave as it does for audio clips?

Currently, it does not travel the length of the unlinked view during playback. It simply (and annoyingly) loops only for the original shorter length of the linked clip.

(I suppose this may have been fixed in the most recent update, but I haven't installed it yet.)

This makes me wonder how far thie inclusion of midi in Live 4 pulled people away from the original Live vibe (for want of a better word).

I remember demoing Live 2 for a while without being totally over awed by the sequencer but on seeing clip envelopes in the first Live 3 betas buying Live immediately. I clearly remember having a eureka moment as I saw lots of new ways to do things, EnergyXT running in sync providing any VSTis which usually ended up bounced to audio relatively quicly. Clip envelopes and follow actions were truly revolutionary and, if I'm really honest here, I still havn't seen anything so innovative come out of Ableton since.

After midi got included I quickly reverted to my old way of working, lots of midi tracks that don't get bounced, together with lots of automation lanes.

Thanks for the gentle reminder Robert, I can't say I've really used clip envelopes for years now. Maybe once or twice for knocking the odd drum out of a loop etc but nowhere near as creatively as in this example you've posted. Such huge variation from so little audio, and so lean on the CPU! I think it's time I put all these CPU hogging AAS synths away for a while and went back over some old methods that I've been neglecting for a long while.

(on WinXP) playing this file back (Live 7.0.5) runs the CPU meter at ~22%.

5 clips, 1 short aif file.. ~22%? Esssh.

I keep getting messgae " Samples are missing" so I've gone to File managment and dropped Noise_m-1.aif on to the single entry in the list called Noise_m-1 (IIRC).
But I stil get the message. So I've gone back to File Managment and clisked "Tell Me More" - now I see a list of 5 samples (0001/3/4/5/6.wav)
Do I need to drop Noise_m-1.aif on all of these too?

Being as we do have midi these days I still wish they'd smarten it up a bit, it still has lots of, um, potential for improvement.
