so how much is the difference ... and will they give you a break on this, or at least a discount as a gesture of goodwill ?

Yeah, the older version is buggy, won't even work on an Intel Mad; the whole Waldorf Edition package costs a total of about $75 though, and Includes Attack, which is a pretty cool drum synth! If you only bought it new a couple months ago, you'll probably get a discount, which obviously isn't much considering how cheap the whole package is.
