My vote for best film of the year so far? Easy. Wall-E. Maybe the best film I've seen in a couple of years.

Or trailers that reveal the entire film. I went to see The Incredible Hulk the other day - it's average - but had the pleasure of watching the entirety of Hancock in trailer form.

And if you miss the trailer, you can read one of our fine "critics" reciting the synopsis, & maybe adding a couple of "witty" remarks that reveal just how shallow the idiot really is...

This is why I usually end up going to independent films.

Although the independent market is starting to spread itself thin as well.

I'd have to say the best film I've seen this summer was "Bigger, Stronger, Faster." Great documentary and very insiteful in regards to male vanity and inferiority issues that I think every guy experiences at least once in his life.

Most enjoyable film that was a product of the system was probably "Iron Man." Although, I think the fight and the storyline behind the Iron Monger's origin was kind of corny, I thought it was overall a great movie and the acting wasn't all that bad either. It was great seeing Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark (he was really made for the part). The story was fairly believable, considering it's a comic movie.

I thought the "Incredible Hulk" was good. It definitely wasn't the perfect movie but it was enjoyable and entertaining. Plus you have to take into account that the film had to also accomplish the challenge of breaking itself free from the disappointment of Ang Lee's film. It was barely marketed and there's alot of common movie goers that probably avoided the film thinking that it was a sequel to Ang Lee's film.

Although, I guess I am a little bias since I grew up on Marvel Comis and trading cards. I really liked all the little references that were the movie and how they are connecting films in the Marvel Universe to eventually form a big Avengers movie. I really kinda felt like I was watching the comics on the big screen, watching one film made me eager to watch the next issue and find out what's going on with all the characters.

By the way Sleep Tyght, all the films you reference in the original post kick major heiny!

Now, me, I'm a horror film fan, but I rarely trek out to a theatre to see the crap that is being flung against the screens nowadays. No Sir, not even to see if it runs down the screen to make a new pattern. I've managed to catch a few of the newer releases on cable or satellite & believe me, the crap stain down the screen is the same pattern every time! That alone is pretty scary.

Horror films have been co-opted into *mildly* thrilling entertainment, as opposed to being genuinely frightening, or creepy. Just playing it safe & making some scratch to put in the bank.

Hollywood has reduced most genres into predictable & tired formulas, with predictable & tired results. You do get out of a thing that which you put into it!

Like so many things, it's all about familiarity. Kids like to hear the same bedtime stories night after night, the exact same stories! It's comforting to kind of experience it as new, but at the same time know what is ahead, & how it's going to end. So I guess Hollywood thinks we're all little kids...
Now & then we are treated to a truly unique vision, or at least a decent plot!

Look what happened to Science Fiction -it's just action films with sci-fi or futuristic trappings. Now sometimes that's fine & dandy, like Predator for example. But what of real sci-fi like (the original) Andromeda Strain, or THX1138, or 2001: A Space Odyssey ? Whither thou sci-fi?

As for modern sci-fi - I thought Solaris was pretty good.

fuckey yeah , i was bored of that whole shitty matrix cg bollox after the 2nd time i saw it. Its like uber sweet jelly that tastes nice for a bit then makes you want to puke every time you see it or even hear its name.

Me too. Surprised me, especially in comparison to the original 1972 Tarkovsky version. Strong melancholy mood. GREAT soundtrack!
