on the PC you can use SoundForge, it'll load VOB files straight in and you can just grab the audio.

its not free, but i still reckon its the best audio editor on any platform.

Not really. Get DVD Decrypter (it's open source). Load your DVD and hit Decrypt ISO. Once you get your VOB files use DGIndex (Open Source) to 'Demux Audio to WAV'. Alternatively you can download VirtualDubMod (a modified version of Virtual Dub) to open the VOB file directly and Demux audio.

Really, it will take you an hour to fully understand the process assuming you have zero knowledge of mpeg-2. Plus, the applications I suggest can give you the full 48K assuming your audio card is capable.

having read this thread by chance i've tried to rip audio from a dvd with your method. i received 8 .vob files from dvd decrypter and then put one of those into virtualdubmod. but i couldn't find the order 'demux audio' or anything like that. i've also tried with dgindex but only received .ac3 files i was too stupid to convert to .wavs. what did i do wrong?

Hi,

on VirtualDubMod go to 'Streams\Stream List' select the stream you want to save (some dvds have multiple audio streams) and hit Save WAV. Alternatively you can hit the 'Demux' button.

On DGIndex Open your VOB file and hit F5 to allow DGIndex to index the VOB. Leave it for a few seconds and hit the Esc button to stop. Go to 'Audio\Output Method\Demux All tracks' or 'Audio\Decode AC3 to WAV'. Even better, go to 'File\Demux Audio Only Stream' after selecting Decode AC3 to WAV first. This will only save your audio.

Converting AC3 to WAV can be done with BeSweet but it's command line (maybe you could get a GUI for that if you Google it) but don't trust any other application you randomly find to convert AC3. Only well trusted apps and BeSweet, FFDShow, VirtualDub, AviSynth and DGIndex are some of those.

Sound Forge 9 doesn't open vob files.

Actually, +1 on all of that.

I am on XP. I make all my samples (one shots or loops) in Soundforge.

Ableton Live is the only "sampler" I use.
