Ok, found it in the manual:
USB Port 1 - Regular Midi stuff (keyboard, pitch bend, pedals, CCs, bank/program change etc.
USB Port 2 - For sending automap to host/mixer. Ie. Live's automap uses this to recieve.
USB Port 3 - For sending plug-in automap stuff to Automap Server. Ie. The novation wrapper and automap program that controls all that.
The manual at the novation downloads page is quite good now and has been updated, check it out.
Oh yes, and they've updated the automap version to 2.1.1. Hopefully it fixes some gui issues with wrapped plugs.

Just installed the newest version and great news for me!
I don't know if this was already there in the last version, but now there's a check box in the automap plug-in manager to chose whether or not to add the automap border to the plug-in UIs. It caused problems for some plug-ins where if different views where different sizes, the bottom part wouldn't move so it would cover up part of the UI and also not let you change any parameters below that point, until you close and re-opened it. And then it would stick again if you changed it. Also it was just ugly and unnecessary now that we have the transparent overlay box.
Also I just noticed an option to not have the automap window open at host startup. Sweet, I was getting tired of closing that every time I started Live.

just updated and W T F ???
this is pretty cool. I have no idea what's going on but I think the controls are playing the piano on my built in Windows midi synth.
question is do I try to figure it out or make like Silverfish wouldn't and take the red pill?
this is deep, glad I have that second monitor.

it's a whole new book.
can't get automap working, just tweaking out on new shit.
I was an early adopter with this thing, had it for years and have no clue what the hell is going on, can't get automap working. time to do work.

Don't worry man. I got into it the same time as you and I still haven't made any custom automaps for plug-ins. I'm just in the middle of saving each wrapped plug-in that I want to it's own instrument rack so I can organize them how I want in Live's browser. The automap versions go all over the fucking place in the wrong folders in my audio unit folders. Anyways with version 2 now, I'm more inclined to spend the time as it's a bit more straight forward. And like I said, the manual is pretty good now and also check out the video tutorials on the novation site for Automap universal - should get you up to speed!

no pills, yet, just some red bull/vodka/grapefruit juice.
oh man, I can read the words but I have no clue what you're talking about. I'm starting to understand why posts involving 'template 38' made no sense to me in the past.
the #$%^&^%$%^&ing videos on the novation site don't buffer so it's glitchy as all hell, uber annoying.
it doesn't work with Operator? I got it to work with some others, but no Operator?
so, 38 is for midi mapping devices more efficiently and if I want mixer control it's template 40?

Bearing in mind we're all on very wobbly ground here (not including the beers/vodka), yes, 38 is for, let's say, total control over plugins, i.e. you can edit the mappings, and 40 is for a mixture of plugins (mappings can't be edited) and mixer. The basic problem with Live and Automap is that Live doesn't have true Universal Automapping. No idea why though.Tone Deft wrote:no pills, yet, just some red bull/vodka/grapefruit juice.

Edit: just tried operator, works fine for 40.

Basically the way I use it is this:
Template 40 if I want to control the mixer faders
Template 38 if I want full control over a plugin - I can either use the standard Learn functionality on the plugin Automap bar or use the Automap editor. 38 can only be used with automap-wrapped plugins so you can't use 38 with live devices.
What does 'hold down the play button to assign x or y with the touch pad' mean?

yer gettin' it Tone. 38 for plug-ins only (Ie. no live instruments like operator or effects because they are not plug-ins). To use template 38 you must open the plug-in manager adn tell it which of your plug-ins you want to wrap in the automap wrapper. Then there will be a new version of those. For example Pro-53 will have another version called Pro-53 (automap). Then you can assign as many pages of parameters as you like any way you like to the entire set of controls. And all the plug-ins remember how you map it every time you open it because they all get saved within that one template.
so ya, for patch design and hands on control like using a hardware synth, it's gonna be template 38. But for live jamming, I like template 40 because I get levels and I can select the track I want and have it instantly control my first device, which I'll usually have as a rack with my most important tweaks. Plus like I described earlier, use the bottom eight knobs for a plug-ins midi learn or global important tweaks. Then for sends I use a different controller altogether.
It's actually setup exactly how I want it. I just wish all the knobs were endless rotaries, but that weren't notched. Like if there was 16 knobs like on the nocturn it would be perfect. ok and motorized faders but I digress.....

if i may hijack the thread for a little bit?
i'm considering the remote zero to go besides my laptop.
but i have some doubts about this purchase... anyone got some experience with the bitsream3x from CME? or is there something else i should check for?
i have one usb port left over. is this enoughfor the novation to work well... or will i need to buy an additional hub then?
i fear a bit that this Remote thing instead of making things easy complicates stuff... it's price is attractive though.
i intend to use it with ableton live and some plug-ins (but i don't think i need Remote for that) but especially i would like to have good control over my nord modular G2 engine! and that's why i think the novation is a good candidate.
i search something compact (i'm limited in space as i will go live with this kit), of high quality and lots of control... duh... so.
oh and how is the build quality of this thing?
