Fender twin miced really loud with SM 57s

I go guitar -> Sans Amp Tri-Ac amp modeler -> Soundcard -> Live
It gets a decent tone. I have no idea if this is the best way, however. I have tried micing up my guitar by going Guitar -> Sovtek Mig 50 head and Marshall 2x2 cab -> Condenser mic -> Soundcard -> Live and i am surprised at how good it sounds in an untreated room.

usually, i run straight into a toneport UX1, and record into live.
i sometimes use gearbox, and record the output from that, sometimes ill record with no amp/cabinet emulation, and use the gearbox VST plugin, depends on how much flexibility i want (or how indecisive im being)
eh, its not as good as a proper amp, but its good enough for stuffing about
need a good microphone to record from my brothers AC30...

Right Now Im using guitar -> POD xt -> MacBook.
Im thinking about throwing a NI Audio Kontrol 1 Audio Interface between the POD and comp. How practical do you guys think that sounds?

Guitar/Bass/Mic > Presonus Blue Tube > Soundcard/mixer > Live or Cubase. Effects depend on how busy the mix is and what the mood is - a little reverb or delay for fattening. Been using BBE Sonic Maximizer on all recorded audio though. Love that puppy...

POD XT PRO......into MacBook Pro Via USB or sometimes into Ultralite Via S/PDIF. Depending on the amount of controllers in use at the time.

Guitar -> amp -> sm57 -> live
Often when i sample guitar in a jam i just sample the dry signal and monitor it into my amp

I think generally though whats coming through is people's preferences once you've experimented for a while (or how you have played for a long time).
I've been trying this this evening and it seems to work well,
DI Box split A>gate>compressor>Ultralite>Macbook>Live
DI Box split B>Fender Twin>Rode NT1A>Ultralite>macbook>Live
This gives me two tracks one dry but via a valve amp which I can then tweak in Live with whatever effects.
The other DI but pre-gated and compressed which sounds nice and is great coupled with the amp'd sound.
Then I'm still left with all the usual routes in Live to re-record wet signals, mix them up etc.
A bit of it is horses for courses too though, the same method won't always provide the right outcome for the project i guess.
I am looking to add an EQ unit and a multi effects rack unit to my hardware gear though...I like the old Zoom unit Pasha, I've been scoping them out on EBay...I'm liking the Behringer range.
Kind of wishing I hadn't sold all those old Boss pedals....twice
I like GR3 alot, but I do miss the analogue goodness
Now I'm thinking I can get the best results by mixing and matching software and hardware, digital and analogue.
one things for sure, s'fun trying it all out!
Ahh that sounds fun, I've got a Vox amp collecting dust since I picked up Komplete but I should try multitracking like that.

Guitar - pedals- Matchless or Twin- Shure SM57
Sometimes I use Amplitude jimi or waves gtr solo free
Wish I had a neuman tlm84 and a Royer ribbon mic. Someday.
Whatever sounds good to you is good. No matter what your using it's how you tweak the knobs, mic placement, and how you choose to play it vibe-wise.
Nice to hear other people's approach. Food for thought.

for electrics i just record directly these days using amplitude, guitar rig or reaktor, unless i need a wah wah pedal in which i'll mic up my amp with a SM57 (haven't found a decent wah action in software yet)
For acoustics i usually stereo (x-y) mic using a pair of rodes NT5 SD mics.

I usually use stomp boxes into a sansamp triAC, into motu traveler... using latency free motu mixer for recording.
then in playback, i'll add that free Waves Solo plugin to get a bit of speaker simulation to give it some 'room', (mostly i totally turn off the pre-amp section, but sometimes will use the spring reverb stomp box, or put on the clean channel's EQ) then compression/eq plugs after it for that channel strip vibe when mixing.

A quick total is....$1,250,024.67 worth of gear in this one thread.
Anybody Human, the Rode works great as an ambient mic say working in tandem with a close mic on the amp, but you know....I haven't had great results with it for acoustic recording. A little bit of me wishes I'd bought the SE Electronics mic instead (model number escapes me 2200se or something like that).
Or, like Greta, a pair of stereo mikes would be cool! Would love to get into some of that multimic set up.
