fair point it is getting cheaper but the limitations are bullshit

you get 48 tracks
and for an extra 200 you can get 64 i mean come on

its great im sure
but i just dont think that its all its cut out to be
i think that there are so much you can do creativly in live then logic or reason or pro tools

Does Pro Tools 8 have a global tempo change the way Live does?

I think Live is much better for capturing creativity. Though, if I were to record a band, I most likely would use Pro Tools, since it's the only other DAW app I know. I'm not sure I'm going to plunk down the $149 for the upgrade. I need Pro Tools just for playing back old songs from back in the day and extracting audio from them.

Yes, while I'm considering getting PT8 but it would be AS WELL AS Live, not a replacement. Clearly different products in what they are aimed at. I would see PT as an alternative to Logic, Cubase, Sonar, DP. Live is something unique and wonderful though :D

That's why I've hung onto my Ozonic after all these years. I still can't afford to upgrade to the RME kit I want, but when I finally do I'll keep my M-Audio interface around for M-Powered.

Thing is though, last time I checked, you can't use the DV Toolkit with M-Powered. It's a non-issue though. The DV Toolkit is the most hideous ripoff in the industry.

Pro Tools blows. I love Live, and if I have the need to do something that Live can't, I'll use Sonar.

I think that Cubase, Logic, DP, and Sonar are all better programs than Pro Tools Le. Le is a complete joke and a slap in the face to anyone who can't afford a full blown HD/Accel system.

IT'S ON VERSION 8 AND STILL NO EFFING DELAY COMPENSATION ! Oh how you love that comb filtered poor tools sound.....

Now they let you have 48 tracks - the same number as the Cubase giveaway Cubase LE that comes with soundcards, how progressive of them.

They added a few key commands and let you you change some colours, as doable by almost every other DAW in the last 5 years.

It still automatically dithers every internal plugin to 24 bit, no sign of 64 bit mix engine coming here any time soon.

They bundled a few crummy old Wizoo synths which nobody bought since 2004, nobody is likely to want to buy today and called it 'cutting edge virtual instruments'. (still Logic and Sonar have been doing this for years too).

Industry standard - yes and that shows how scared and pathetic people are, too scared to change. It's like adopting the ferking Trabant as the standard of motor vehicles.

PTLE.M-Powered is lower medium quality hardware bundled with freeware quality software. Adding in weak, cut down versions of Reason and Live makes no difference.

As for value - Reaper offers you way more and costs 50 bucks for a non commercial license. The cut down SOnar, Cubase and Logic Express offer way more and cost less and they don't tie you to specific mediocre hardware.

Does Pro Tools 8 have a global tempo change the way Live does?

yes it does

it also allows as complex tempo maps as you can possibly create
but for me, even more improtant is that you can record/edit MIDI
without a grid!!!

LIVE is great but lets face it, its aimed specifically at loops/bars/beats
to the degree that you cant even change the tempo without altering all
the MIDI at the same time...

the strangest thing I find though is this issue with 'industry standard'
WTF? who cares what anyone else uses?
use what works for you & GET OVER IT

the vehemence of the reaction about something that really has no effect on you makes me think there is some deeper psychological issue at the core of it - whether its an inferiority complex (and I am not saying one app is better or worse than the other - they are different, thats all. End of story)
or where does this big chip on the shoulder come from?

ProTools has been around a LOT longer than many other apps & has evolved a long way - many of its most important features (to me) simply would not be apparent to someone who hasnt used it much (esp with that chip on your shoulder)
its like Photoshop in that sense, of coure there are alternatives & for some uses other apps may well be 'better' but maybe its time to get over the childish 'this is better than that' tantrums...

use what works best for YOU

And then there's the Vi plugins.

I just bought this PT plugin and my days left with live are seriously numbered.

8)

Lots of PT uninformed peeps on this board

And like i've said before; PT Le is not PT. PT HD is PT.

How many people have PTHD setups at home (not studio).

How many people have PTLE / M-Powered setups at home.

Obviously, to many, many people, PTLE is Protools and that's how Digidesign sell it. 'Take your projects straight to the studio'.

PTLE is the affordable consumer face of PT.

And it is a very poor representation of PTHD

And while we're at it, while PTHD is indeed a far superior system, I would take Nuendo and a good interface such as RME or Logic and Apogees etc. any time, have a far superior system in both cases and have plenty of pocket change.

Do/did you have a Pro Tools system?

I have access to one at work, along with Logic and Cubase.

Vastly overpriced. The system itself is good for audio and audio editing, MIDI is just as weak as PTLE and it has too many restrictions like only 5 inserts per channel. Some of the plugins are nice, but mostly you can get these for native systems or excellent alternatives. The very low latency is of benefit, but you can get super low latencies on RME interfaces too.

I stand by my earlier comment. The uneducated are the ones who blindly follow. I know several engineers who run ProTools courses who cannot even stand the software and use Cubase or Logic or Sonar.

To each, his own for sure.

In case anyone is interested, here is a great look at delay compensation in PT.

Thanks for that link.

Quite a lot of the issues that put people off previous versions of Pro Tools seem to be addressed here: for example I never went beyond 48 stereo tracks in my modest home studio.

Having Sibelius scoring feature, auto-crossfades and great audio editing make PT8 look like a neat companion to Ableton Live in fact, and presumably the Suite instruments can be used in PT8 via rewire?

the new features in PT8 sound great. unfortunately for digidesign i moved to digital performer and ableton during PT7. i don't think i want to switch again.
