Speaking about mainstream hip-hop
(because there is ALWAYS good shit to be found)
Themeatically-
I would like to hear more liberal, anti religious, anti fascist, anti war, anti racist hip-hop. That shit doesn't have to be boring either. Throw in a few explitives and the kids will still feel rebellious.
Less machoism, racism, sexism, materialism. More politics.
I'd like to see more female/transexual/gay/non-black/non-American MCs in the mainstream.
Soundwise -
For me personally, hip-hop is more about the producer doing a montague, than an MC spittin his vox, so sampling is integral IMO.
I love the sound of chopped up records, but I'd like more stuff based on world music, folk, rock etc (not just jazz/soul/funk/disco)
and more cowbell.

HipHop needs more Common and definitely more Mos Def.

But that's not innovation. Surely it needs to branch off some different directions.
Maybe none of us can actually say what it needs. Maybe we all need to be pleasantly surprised.

I should add: I find both innovaTIVE, of course nothing completely new (a beat and a rap) but outstanding and I would like the whole scene to go more into this direction (more soul!)
I second the wish for a surprise, but please let it come together with some proper lyrics.

the thread lingers...
looking back there's a TON of innovation in hip hop, I think that's what sucking about it, the lack of consistently good stuff.
rappers and producers are looking for any which way they can to sell out with hip hop. Snoop Dogg even made a country rap song! they're in bed with electronica, rock, country, classical, what's next? opera?
I saw Diddy on the televisionbox the other day, he was bragging that hip hop was so HUGE that MTV had to create a whole new channel because MTV 1 is all hip hop. umm there are no videos on MTV 1 anymore.

I'd take anything he said with a grain of imitation salt.

I saw him guest starring on CSI: Miami, for about 1.5 lines of dialog (that's all I could handle)

I respectfully disagree - I'd prefer to hear more gangsta style stuff. Much more entertaining - I do plenty of academic stuff all day - the last thing I want is more of the same in my music.
I prefer to be entertained by my music and educated by my professors
but that is just my opinion. I do understand that not everyone feels the way I do and there is nothing wrong with that.
but yes, more gang banging, crack selling, rims, clothes, grillz, and "bitches" pleeeeeeze
