Downloading the update right now ... I'm curious ...

Before even trying this thing out yet, I predict 3 things:

1 - Full integration with the Live interface is going to turn out to be a really amazing feature.

As people start digging in deeper into that the power of it is probably going to become apparent. Might still not be worth the asking price in some people's opinion, but thats to be seen.

2- The simpiciity of the interface is probably decieving - Lives interface is also "simple" by comparison with say - Cubase or Logic - but how many of us here are constantly blown away by the way those simple features interact?

I am every single day and there seems to be no end to it

3 - People on forums love to bitch and moan and fly off the handle before giving things a chance. *yawn* ... seen it a million times. Some of you are going to come back with a different tune. Maybe not about the price .. but mea culpa on the quality.

After messing with this for a week: THEN I'll post something sarcastic and pissed off. If thats the way I feel about it ..

Downloaded it at last.

I'm pissed off actually, I was kind of hoping to dislike it but I think it's a really good intuitive synth with some pretty smooth bottom end. The reason i was hoping to dislike it is that i really can't justify spending that ammount of cash on any more music software at the mo. It's up againced some stiff competition at that price too, it's only a bit more for the Absynth!!

I do wish the Abes had thrown in some new midi FX and sorted out some more pressing issues though, for instance, Acid 5 is now able to extract a groove from some audio and apply it to something else :? Once a good idea is out of the bag it doesn't take long before another company runs away with the ball, the trick is to keep your eye on it!!!!!!

I hope Ableton havn't wasted a lot of valuable programming time on a rather good FM synth at the risk of losing ground to the competition.

Hat's off to Robert for making such a good little synth, I wish I could afford it.

[Whats wrong with you people??]

The price for starters.

Unless I am mistaken, Operator can only be used in Live. Therefore it was developed with Live users in mind to purchase it. Were we asked if it was something we wanted? Wouldn't it have been better to have used the money we pay for Live to pay for development of Live itself, there are surely enough ideas in the wishlist forum. What if only a few people buy it? Will they get enough return on it? Surely it would have been better to add it to the next paid update and just build in a smaller cost to cover it.

I have tried it and it is OK, but I would far rather buy a VST instrument that I can use in other programs and get more use from. If Operator had been a VST then at least Ableton would have had a bigger market to sell to. I know the intention is the integratrion with Live itself, but at the moment, at the price it is, when I buy another soft synth it will be a VST.

Price:

Yes I agree it seems high at first glance. Ive said so elsewhere.

But the more I use this, the more Im beginning to think that its worth it
Lots of reasons which I dont feel like typing out right now.

Consider one thing for now: you often pay for built in EFX in VST's, which make the presets all that much more spectacular souding out of the box.

Operator has none. But -- add Simple Delay, Ping pong delay, reverb, chorus, resonatore, Grain delay, MIDI pitch, MIDI random, autofilter, redux .. etc etc etc ...

oh! Look! gee now you have something that produces a plethora of amazing fucking sounds, in ONE TENTH of the time it takes to decipher and figure out what the hell is really going on in say ... z3TA.

Question:

Which is better to have?

a. A VST that sounds great - with a complicated interface that takes a long time to learn how to configure (I mean REALLY configure, not just tweak presets here and there) and use well, that can be used in a lot of sequencers.

or

b. A custom softsynth that sounds great - that is EASY to learn how to program and configure to get great custom sounds out of - that integrates completley with the only sequencer you actually use?

It may well totally "kick ass" but for the price of one OPERATOR you could buy a Concrete FX bundle of Adder / Dicer / Etereal / Digital.

You could have Bought Kubik + Sytrus and had change left over.

Lets see $49 more gets you Pluggo for Windows.

Dashsignature's Eve and other companies synths like Wusikstation etc etc are way more competitively priced than this.

I still stand my my $49-50 sale price for this especially when I can get GANIMED for nothing or OXE fm for that matter.

They should have atleast allowed drag & drop of samples into the modulator or carrier slots for some SY77 style AFM.

The fact that the Demo ties in with demo mode just plain SUCKS.

As I stated I don't have credit cards etc and am on an extremely limitied budget and this after Oz conversion and bank wiring fees is over $224 Australian which quite frankly is ludicrous for what it is.
I could get an ESQ-1 for that price or a DX of some sort and just sample the crap out of it instead really now couldn't I ................

Ditto...
PS; It doesn't offer anything else that my current VSTI's can do... And since they are VSTI's and AU's, I can use them with other applications as well... For $20 dollars I would consider, but $149...- You've got to be joking!!!

I'm downloading my 4.1 upgrade as I type this. I'll hold off on my Operator opinion until I mess about with it for a bit. However, with regards to the "what else I would rather pay $149 for...", I can certainly raise a cheer to that.

Besides myself, any Mac users who've been frustrated using Live in standalone with the Digidesign Core Audio driver? It's just one of the reason I don't mix in Live (and posted a thread about it last week). I decided to write to Ableton one last time regarding this poor behavior, as a few other emails (dated to last year some time) went amiss.

So here's what I wrote to Ableton:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

have you encountered problems with Live (standalone) and Digidesign hardware? I ask this because for the longest time I've been doing some writing on the road using the Mac's sound outputs and getting decent performance. However, when I get home and plug in my Digi002R so that I can record live sources and hear through my monitors, the performance decreases quite a bit.

When a session boots up, it takes a long time for all the waveforms of each clip to render so that I can begin a stutter-free playback, and overall, it's just very sluggish using that Core Audio driver (beachball, freezes. etc.).

I just want to know if it's a Digidesign issue so that I can hope for a better driver update in the future? To be honest, I've considered selling my 002R and giving up on ProTools (after 3+years) just to have better performance with Live with a new interface....

Thanks for any kind of info.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and the reply I received from Ableton:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a behaviour you will notice with every external audio interface
(firewire/usb) regardless of the system or appliction you use. Usually
you'll get a decrease around 10-20% compared to an internal
(pci/onboard) audio solution.

Best regards,
__________

HUH??????????????????

Someone mentioned Altivec optimization earlier? I would pay more than the cost of Operator if they can make what's already good enough in Live work properly on a god damn G4!!!!! You want me to pay $150 for yet another stupid synth? No one's mentioned that Simpler has some amazing presets and sound manipulation capabilities, I look at it as a synth/sampler combo, I've made some really nice patches with it so far.

I read something about trumpet, oboe, huh, wtf? So, it's trying to be a rompler too? Man, for $150, I can get Arturia's Minimoog vst, which I think is sublime! I already have a Roland XV-5050 for all that cheezy stuff! Ok, in all fairness, perhaps I'll really like Operator, but come on Abes, OPTIMIZE YOUR SOFTWARE FOR US SORRY-ASS G4 USERS, THE PERFORMANCE IS PATHETIC!!!

Then, have yourselves a nice swedish meatball dinner at an Ikea cafeteria near you, and only then - when you've optimized your beautiful software for Altivec - you should consider trying to compete with Reason (or not).

'night.

Meatballs? Who [edit: whom] are you adressing with that?
Abletons, I guess, eat Leberknödelsuppe.
I am sitting on an IKEA char right now. It does not hurt me in any way, it just lets me be. No one forced me to buy it.
