What you don't understand regarding berlusconi and "italian politics" is that he does not give a damn about EU or whatever. He just needs something to avoid jail, because he led mafia in the northern italy (that is why he is so rich: mafia gave him money through drug traffic and swiss banks). If you don't understand this, you cannot understand the italian "tragedy" (or "comedy", whatever you want to see it).

What you don't understand is that his motif, which I will not pretend to guess, is entirely irrelevant.
