Many thanks for the advice - I have set CoolBook to 2171MHz and 1.1375v - I don't see anywhere to set a temperature limit.

Firstly, thanks to Tarekith for going to the trouble to prepare this test for us.

I've had performance problems with 6 ever since installing (5 used to work much better) so I was v interested to see that the core has been reworked in 7 and this was my main reason for upgrading.

However, I had just done the above test on both v6 and v7 and there is no difference, in fact v6 is marginally better for me. My laptop was top of the range 3yrs ago, and is now in need of replacement, but performance shouldn't be THIS bad? I could only run 2 of the 8 tracks, and even then with my CPU at 75% (v6) or 77% (v7).

Is there anything I can do to optimise my set-up, before upgrading? I already am careful about not using other apps, cleaning my registry, defragging, etc.

Ableton 6.09
============
1) Ableton Live CPU Meter % 75%
2) Laptop/Desktop? Sony Vaio Laptop
3) Operating System? XP Home SP2
4) Ableton Live version? 6.09
5) CPU Make, Model, and Speed? Intel Pentium, 1.73GHz
6) Amount of Ram? 1GB
7) Soundcard ? M-Audio Firewire Audiophile
8) Hard Disk Drive Speed? don't know
9) Number of playback tracks? 2

Ableton 7.01

These results are similar to my older 1.73Ghz Pentium M D800 Laptop.

Time for an upgrade

If anyone else can help me host the test files, I'd greatly appreciate it. Demand for these has been much higher than I expected, and I'm borderline on my bandwidth for my site 2 months running.

Thanks!

First of all, you're not the only one having problems with cpu usage on mbps these days.

Also, what makes you think it's not Leopard?

i know i am not the only one, but i did not expect it to get worse with 7, i thought i would get better results. i know it is not Leopard cause i upgraded Live a week before I upgraded my OS. once 7 worked bad with tiger, i then thought Leopard would maybe fix it. i emailed the abes. i want my cash back and i want live 6 back on my system. probably a long shot, but i got to try.

i was bummed cause i had two days filled with 12 hours of air travel, thinking i would work on some tunes. yeah right. spent all my time and battery juice freezing tracks just to play a song. one song for instance used to play at only 20 - 25%; now it is hitting 70% spikes :(
