Re: iPad
Why? Because as you said:LoopStationZebra wrote:I'm not following you here because you can easily set up an adhoc wifi connection between your laptop and iDevice right now. Why would you need to go through an iPhone?- Secondly, now that the iphone can be used as a hotspot, I guess that would be a great way to connect the ipad to your laptop for control surface apps when you're away from you're usual home set up. I imagine people wouldn't always want to rely on some wi-fi connection nearby or even at a venue. It seems to me this iphone wi-fi will be great for ipad to lappy communication.
Ad hoc networks in my experience have to be reset whenever you used wi-fi in between. Whereas using an existing wi-fi metwork is pretty much just open the app, press "connect" and go. So I'm thinking using an iphone wi-fi will be much easier and quicker to use than ad hoc.And won't get lost because you can always use it without setup. Just turn on the wi-fi from iphone. I dunno, just an idea.LoopStationZebra wrote: Having to setup different shit, even if it only takes a minute, FUCKING PISSES ME OFF.I want to walk up to my rig, turn on the iPad, and start playing. I don't want to have to enter in all my fucking IP settings across multiple wifi protocols (if I've got more than one app that I'm using, which I do).

I see what you're getting at... What will happen with latency now that I would go from iPad-->iPhone-->MacBook.
I actually don't understand why my MacBook can't have Personal Hotspot.
And let's hope you don't have to fiddle with the iPhone hotspot settings everytime like you do with adhoc.

Wait a minute. My iPhone says that app came out in 2009. So that ability has been around for 2 years and developers are wasting valuable time being clever with velocity zones?

Yup, and linked on the forum at least a year ago: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php? ... 6#p1068426]
Edit: just for completeness, here's one that uses the microphone to guess at velocity: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/10/g ... -says-yes/

Re: iPad
As for latency. My ipad connects to my computer currently by going to a wireless router downstairs, which then connects to my laptop beside me upstairs, and the latency isn't bad, so I'm sure an iphone right next to both your lappy and ipad couldn't be slower. And considering both a laptop and ipad connect automatically if they've connected before, you'd pretty much just flip a switch in the phone to transmit the signal.LoopStationZebra wrote:glitchrock-buddha wrote: Ad hoc networks in my experience have to be reset whenever you used wi-fi in between. iMovie not compatible with iPad 1.
Fuck. They totally need a redo on yesterday's sloppy keynote.

Re: iPad
As far as I know the personal hot spot ability is yet another obnoxious charge on top of your already obnoxious cell bill and it also has a data limit. So if nothing else it may not be a cost effective option.
I know you guys are saying you don’t need to hit any cell towers for your purposes on this but I’m saying it may be an all or nothing situation where you can’t just opt out of hitting the cell towers in order to use it for your convoluted MIDI scheme.

Re: iPad
I could be wrong here but I think 99.99% of the point of having a hot spot is to connect to the internet. Other than this weird MIDI thing you guys are hoping to pull off here I can’t think of another situation it would be useful.glitchrock-buddha wrote:WTF. Stupider shit has happened. It was reported on the Xoom pad they won’t even let you use wifi if you don’t also sign up for a 3g account.

Re: iPad
Translate this how you want it but this is the latest on AT&T's plan.
"AT&T will start supporting the Personal Hotspot feature in sync with the launch of iOS 4.3. Hotspot functionality will require a $25/month DataPro plan with 2 GB of data plus the $20/month add-on tethering plan that AT&T recently changed by adding an additional 2 GB of data capacity. So, you will be paying $45 a month for a 4GB of data."

Re: iPad
Further thought…..
As it stands now it is recommended that you create an adhoc network over using your wifi router because it’s more reliable for whatever reason. Now if a wifi router is perfectly stable for just about everything else except MIDI exactly how stable would you expect a cell phone to be in that capacity?
Answer below.
Not much.
