Rozling, I wanted to like all of your posts then. Then I had the sad realisation that the Ableton forum has been usurped, and I am no longer willing to spend any more effort than clicking "like" to any of it, and therefore this is probably one of the last posts where I could be arsed typing some shit from here on out.
Well... they banned politics and religion. Fuck all left here to talk about for people who've used ableton since v1. And people don't like you talking in this pic thread either. So, laters.
Ah well, end is nigh anyway, innit?

Will do, although I am more active on Twitter these days (@rozling)Forge. wrote:^but if you can be arsed PMing Facebook details, I would willingly follow your feed

Sounds like time to break out the Huxley/Orwell comparison (I still need to read these books :/), although FWIW I do think sharing this stuff is a useful tool as a release valve for the brain. It's easy to get into a zombie-ish loop where it feels like you're just clicking for teh dopamines but sometimes when I'm my most productive I will still zip through imgur/tumblr or what have you as a way to get out of a different loop.

That didn't quite come out how I meant - I basically mean I know there are people who are interested in the forum but not enough to engage - I know there have also been a few (especially recently) who have been fighting the good fight despite knowing all the bullshit they will have to deal with and fair fucks to them!rozling wrote: I know musical-minded eyeballs still frequent from time to time hence I still do a picdump every now and then

Re: Orwell vs. Huxley
Very pointed juxtaposition of the two and our reality in the pic, but the conclusion doesn't follow. Both were right and to about the same extent too!
The surveilance/police state and Idiocracy are not an either/or proposition!
And with your Facebook/Twitter presence you are playing right into their hands on both fronts.

Am I though? Let's not forget that Facebook and Twitter enable a type of communication that's not easily done elsewhere - these are platforms that simply weren't there before. While I admit that I can get lost in them from time to time (and often load them up for that exact purpose), I can extract meaningful 'stuff' from them: relationships, discussions, information... the main reason I keep coming back here (and not other music forums) is for some fractured sense of 'community'.TomViolenz wrote:Re: Orwell vs. Huxley

Twitter in particular I find fascinating because it gives you a kind of access you didn't have before. E.g. Last Friday I hit a roadblock with my broadband provider - they basically overcharged me and refused to issue a refund, with my only option being to cancel my account after 5+ years. Within 20mins of tweeting their CEO I had someone dealing with me who was highly motivated to resolve my problem. This wouldn't have been possible without Twitter unless I was extremely well connected.
Facebook is harder to justify. When it appeared I was really excited about it being a major leap forward, but like the cartoon says, I underestimated people's almost infinite appetite for distractions. However, most of my core group of friends emigrated years ago and (although we are getting better now) none of us are the type of people for whom it comes naturally to pick up the phone for a weekly chat etc. Facebook is a way for us to see what's going on in each others' lives, not just through what they post up themselves but through their interactions with other people, and you start to get an impression of what they mean to these people that you wouldn't have otherwise.
That's just addressing them as tools. I know there is the bigger issue of control - there has been a lot in the media lately about the 'ruling class' and I tend towards believing it. I am not sure that it's organised in a broad way except through the nature of capitalism. I think (their) greed might just be our downfall and I'm extremely worried about what the future holds for the next generation, nevermind the ones after that.
