Ha, I do actually own an iphone 4 and an ipad. That's why this hotspot thing is the biggest news to me, because it always bothered me that I couldn't tether from iphone to ipad like I can to my laptop. I only have the wi-fi ipad. I refuse to buy another data plan for an ipad. But of course I'll always have my iphone if I do take my ipad out of a wi-fi area. That's annoying about the add-on costs for tethering for you guys in the States, but that's specific to the carriers in each country. I just checked on the availability in Canada and...... drum roll.......... we get it free! wooohooo! The Dream is definitely back on. At least with my carrier (Rogers/Fido), it's free for anyone with over 1GB data plan. We never got the cheap unlimited plans that were offered in the states though. The plans are more regularly crap like 500mb for 25 dollars. Or 2gb for 30. Not great anyways. I was lucky and got an intro deal when the plans first launched which gives me 6gb for 30 dollars. Free hotspot with that now and it's looking pretty good.

What else are you missing out on from first gen iphone? Where to start. I think you know though. Screen resolution is not something I thought I'd care about but the resolution is just amazing. The speed is so much better too. No more sluggishness like on my old 3G. Camera with flash, video recorder. All useful things.

While 2 iPads would be the absolute SHIT in terms of music creation, I'm going to be happy with just a new iPhone 5 that I can at least use as a 2nd controller/instrument. Man, I wonder if I can convince 80 and the Konkreet Labs chaps to make an iPhone5 version of Performer.

Would you really want to do that? I can't imagine using my iphone for anything music related. Tried nanostudio and a couple things but it's just no fun using such a little device. Even my ipad I'm not a huge fan of for music apps, except for the amazing control surface apps like touchable and the the new Omni TR for Omnisphere. These are pretty handy, but I personally still just love my Novation Remote SL, my APC40, Kore and Maschine for most control. I just like the physical setup and actually playing keys, turning knobs and hitting pads. Clip sequencing on the ipad though, that's gonna be the bomb. Got griid recently and am really looking forward to using the clip piano roll in that more. You just can't duplicate that in hardware easily. But an iphone, really? The thing is so small!

2 ipads though, yeah that will be useful. When the ipad3 comes out, I'll be keeping my first gen for control surfaces so having two will be great. Having an ablton controller in one and other apps in the other like Omni TR or a dedicated synth. This brings up a question. Is it possible to sync an ipad app to your DAW yet? For example if I'm using the iMS-20 and I wanted to route the audio into Ableton, but obviously I'd want to sync the rhythm of the drum machine, is this possible via the camera connection kit midi? I haven't gotten into that yet.

Konkreet Performer on the iPhone? Seriously though, it's not out of the question, no, but as soon as the first iPad came out we had that size in mind when working on the user interface design for Performer. And we deliberately put considerations for iPhone size in lower priority so that we wouldn't have to compromise Performer in any way. If it happens it's going to go through lots of usability testing to make sure it works nicely on a small screen and isn't just a miniaturised version... so, we're looking at it, but no promises...

The ONLY thing iPhones are better for is racing games.

Don't get me wrong. I have zero interest in using an iPhone for either instrument or controller apps in any long term sense. I'm merely curious as to how 2 touch apps might interact. For instance, I'd love to use Performer to control a MIDI track macro, but that MIDI track is actually routed out to my NLogSynth Pro app on my iPad (who's MIDI assignments I've already mapped to the macros on that track). This kind of iPad to iPad via DAW has just not been done and reported on...at all. And it's a fucking doozie of an app. SynthX. The most butt-ugly yet geeky cool Atari like interface and WICKED analog synth sounds.



The LFO is MIDI sync'd. And it works. JOY. Why he didn't sync that fucking delay parameter I'll never know. I connected via OSX MIDI Network, and that beautiful clock bpm changed right along with my changes in Live. Haven't tried it yet with the CCK, but that's next.

But still...we now have two apps that have gotten MIDI sync to work: Molten and SynthX.

The iMS-20 is the biggest crime, though. A truly incredible app hampered by SHIT MIDI implementation. Only MIDI receive; with no change in sight for send or clock. The good news is that at least most now offer send and receive.

So you're saying that the iMS-20 can receive midi clock from live? How would you do that? How to get midi from the computer to something that only accepts usb? Or can the camera connection kit accept midi via some other midi peripheral?

The iMS-20 will only receive MIDI notes/CCs. It won't accept clock at all.

There's two ways to go with MIDI.

1. wifi using OSC/OSCulator or the OSX MIDI Network protocol or a custom OSC script like touchAble uses or...etc.

2. Then you've got the USB option via the Camera Connection Kit or the LIne6 MIDI Mobilizer. The Line thing is fading fast, though. I'd avoid it. The CCK will work with a USB peripheral like the Akai LPK25 keyboard, or it can work with a USB-to-MIDI cable like the M-Audio UNO that I use (standard MIDI jacks at one end, USB on the other baby!).

Hope that's what you were after.
